We want to show you, you can see there is a big yellow crane thats beginning to remove train cars from the overpass at this hour. A major interstate below still shut down as investigators try and figure out what made this train go off the tracks. Oh, my god. Reporter it was supposed to be a triumphant day but in an instant amtrak 501s inaugural run on a faster track turned into tragedy. A lot of melting and screeching and a lot of just investigators are on the scene trying to determine what caused the passenger train to hurdle off an overpass. Sdmrt train was going at 80 about 80 Miles Per Hour. Reporter in a 30mileperhour zone, right . Thats right. Reporter railcars crashing into vehicles on the interstate below. Officials say so far three people from the train were killed. Over 100 injured. It was wet, it was cold. We had downed power lines. We also had downed trees. It was very slippery and theres no access to this scene except from i5 so our responders were climbing up and down this hill trying to get to those victims. Reporter amtrak cascades train 501 left just after 6 00 a. M. 85 passengers and crew on board. 7 34, a locomotive and 12 cars careening off both sides of the overpass. Amtrak 501, emergency, emergency, emergency, we are on the ground. Is there everybody okay . Im still figuring that out. We got cars everywhere and down onto the highway. Reporter the impact caused passengers to fly out of their seats. People were flying, you know, youre like, oh, my god. This is real and start to see the roof kind of peeling and its just like is this ever going to stop . It was almost like being inside a dryer machine, shook completely to the other side of the taken and then back. Reporter when dan and his girlfriend came across the accident scene, the eagle scout sprang into action. There was injured people walking all over the place in shock and i was like, dude, somebody needs to just be a leader, sort of organize one of the trains had tipped upside down and kind of spilled the passengers out then the train came down on top of them. Thats where i was like, whoa, this is gnarly and those victims were pretty badly beat up and when they were pinned under the train i grabbed the dudes hand and was like rubbing his back and im so impressed by you. Youre a champion and just talking to him. Reporter now, one Safety System that difference is called positive train control or ptc, you can think of it like an autopilot. If the train is going too fast, ptc automatically slows you down but Officials Say even though ptc was installed on these tracks, it had not yet been activated. George. Big problem there. I well, we had never been theres been no passenger traffic travel on this route before so it we didnt really have any experience about it. So when was the first moment you knew something was wrong . So, everything seemed to be going fine up until the point where theres this over i5 and so it really only what we felt was for a split second we felt a little we felt like we were going into a turn but then we heard felt some jittering and the next thing we knew, we were flying off the rails and then down an embankment. There was no slowing down as you head into that curve . It i dont recall any. So you say you went down into an embank many. What kind of fall was that for you . For me it was we were just sort of catapulted into the seats in front of us. And you look okay right now. You had no injuries. What about everybody else in the car . Most most of the passengers in our car had only minor injuries. There was one person who in the car in front of us, they were catapulted to car and they were pretty badly injured. They were unconscious but still breathing. So youre tilted on this embank many. How did you get out . So, we at first we tried the emergency door but that wouldnt budge because the train car had been crumpled and so what we had to do was we pulled out the strap the string around the emergency window and we kicked that out. Were people panicked, screaming, crying, calm . No, there were there were people screaming behind us in the car behind but there was no way we could access them. And what could you see of the cars i think they were ahead of thaw went over the overpass . Could you see that at all . Yeah, so the cars that we were on the other side so couldnt see the cars that went over the overpass. But what i could see from the window was we had disconnected from the other the back see that someone had been catapulted from the train onto the ground. It is a big political win for republicans and the president but doesnt deliver on those two promises . Thats what democrats are hoping for in november in the midterm elections and the russia Investigation Continues to hang over the president. The white house hoping this week that some of that cloud may be lifted. Theyve scheduled this meeting between the white house lawyers and special counsel Robert Muellers team. Reporter yeah, and this is a pretty standard meeting from what we understand. The lawyers want to get a sense of where it stands and likely want to know whether President Trump himself is under investigation. Theyve had to lawyers have had to change what they are telling the president and told him it would be done thanksgiving initially and then christmas and now pushed it back and wrapped early into next year. We know its expected to go well into 2018. Is the president braced for that, cecilia . Thats the question. He has long said this is a witchhunt. We hear him repeatedly say that theyve done nothing wrong here so that certainly is the standard line, but, look, this is a cloud hanging over this white house. There is absolutely no doubt about that. They cannot shake this and want to focus on tax reform and the agenda Going Forward but questions are still hitting them hard. The white house hoping for a letter of exoneration from the special counsel. Thats unlikely to come any time soon and the big question does the special counsel want to talk to the president . That is going to be one of the big moments. Thats not how it works. You dont get an assurance of a letter of exoneration to allow everything to go forward. The investigation will go forward. The question is whether theyll interview the question is key but this thing is vast and fastmoving. Theyve now moved that large yellow crane into place to begin the process of lifting those damaged train cars off of the overpass here. Three people were killed around 100 injured when that amtrak train careened off the bridge just after 7 30 yesterday. The train was on its inaugural run from seattle to portland with 85 crew and passengers on board. Now, investigators with the National Transportation safety board are here and say they are looking at speed as a major factor in this crash because the train was going 80 Miles Per Hour in a 30mileperhour zone. But they do stress they still have a lot of work to do before they can determine the actual cause of this crash. One thing they say will help is they did recover a data recorder from one of the locomotives and say hopefully that will provide more pieces to the puzzle, paula. Well call them young men between 12 to 16 years old for an important conversation in wake of the me too movement. You remember what it was like to be 12 years old. Yeah, trying to forget. Boys in that age range starting to have crushes and date but that territory comes with so many questions for both kids and their parents so were trying to get some answers. Im dawen. Im 12. Reporter they are six boys from the denver area. Im sebastian, im 15. Im giovanni and im 14. Reporter all at a critical age when relationships come to the forefront. We ask what its like to be a teenage boy. I have a girlfriend. Reporter their parents watching and listening in but the boys dont know that. Do your parents know you guys dr. Crushes and or girlfriends . Yeah. No. [ laughter ] try to keep it like on the down low. Exactly. Keep them out of your business, you know. Reporter dr. Stephanie dowd, a child psychologist from the Child Mind Institute also watching our interview says parents need to make it their business and convey what a healthy relationship looks like right from the start. Having a healthy romantic relationship requires both partners to have empathy and see it from the other persons perspective. Reporter as the newness of dating sets in for these boys. You go places together, hold happens in the hallway. Our school is really close to panera so on fridays we walk to panera and a lot of times we walk together. Thats where the magic happens is at panera bread. They have good soup and salad. That is true. Reporter at this age experts say parents should quote, sex talk with boys and create a dialogue about romantic feelings, emotions and consent. This is specifically how you ask for concept. Are you okay with this . Does this feel comfortable to you . Its as simple as that. Parents just need to model that for their kid. What does it mean to have concept . Both people that are doing something want to be doing it. Lets say you are in class and notice one of your classmate, a male puts his hand on one of your female classmates legs and doesnt have permission. Is that okay . No. No. If its Sexual Harassment you cant do that. When someone tells you to be a man, what does that mean. You have to be mature. Cant show emotion, just got to be like manly. Do you feel in order to be a man you have to hide your emotions . Thats a part of it yes. Thats part of it. Yeah, definitely. And you should be able to show your emotions no matter what and not have people think worse or lesser of you. These messages are very rigid for boys and men and dangerous. Parents have to expand the definition of what it means to be a man. You know, your parents werent in the room but they heard everything you said. What . No, they didnt. The parents taking to heart the importance of their own behavior. When they touched on what it meant if someone said be a man was telling because i think sometimes we can send the wrong message. I loved how much they wanted to respect everybody else. It was pretty incredible. I got to say i dont think we give these boys enough credit. The moment that stuck out when i asked what does it mean to be a man. You could tell that, you know, they want to be able to express themself but because of societal expectations theyre not allowed to and cant express their emotions. They expressed it well there. Very well spoken. I want to bring in stephanie dowd. Dr. Dowd. You were in the piece and we talk all about not having just these boys 12 to 16 so starting to have relationships, its not just about having the out, what it means to be a strong relationship. How do you do that . The thing to remember is that teens really love to talk about love. So when youre a parent you want to approach your teens with a compassionate curiosity. You want to ask them questions, find out what they think about relationships. Ask them questions about what dating is like at your school. How do you know if two people are interested in each other. So get them talking. And then the other thing you want to do is you want to help them distinguish between a healthy, romantic relationship and an unhightechy one and one thats healthy theres mutual respect, compromise and caring between two people. This series has generated so much interest on social media. Big platform for kids nowadays and heres something we got in on twitter. Teach them that each persons body is his or her own, full stop. Show him respectful all every day. Social media as i said is big for this group. Everybody is on it so as a parent how do you teach your kid how to respect and promote being respectful on social media . Right, social media is really tough. You know, its important that parents tell their teen that anything they post could be posted anywhere and it could last forever so you want to tell your teen that if you post something, imagine that it could be posted on a billboard in the middle of many times square for everyone to see including their grandmother and so that will get them shy they got when they heard their parents its a way for them to be mindful and aware what they put online could be seen by anyone. The thing to remember also with teens is that they tend to act based on instant gratification and react without thinking. So you want to make sure you tell your teen, listen, before you post something, pause, think, maybe even walk out o post what you want to pote. But its important that when they post, theyre imagining a person behind the screen that they dont want to just post to a computer. Its actually a person on the other end so you want to really encourage that empathy. Lasts forever like you said. Dr. Dowd, thank you so much and thanks for the guidance. This might be the next play. You never know. You might star in it. Or not. You might write the play. Your book is so thick you cant even get the cover on it. Cant get the cover of the gift you can do weights. I tell you i love exchanging books. I think its just the greatest thing and for everybody out there at home, have your kids do it. Autria breaking right now, a massive fire in maryland. Firefighters being told to get out. Larry we just spoke to people who were inside the apartment. Ryan hughes is live on the scene with more. Ryan we are hearing about some dramatic rescues. We can tell you that this fire is now under control and firefighters are now in the cleanup mode. I want to bring in the assistant fire chief alan doubleday. What is the latest out here . I just got notification that we have 11 units affected with 19 adults and 11 children being displaced. The red cross will be working with us to find temporary shelter for them. We had significant fire welladvanced when we got on the scene. At this point now, were just all very fortunate that we did not have very significant injuries out of this. Ryan lets talk about some of the injuries we did have. Five people were treated on scene. Three were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Smoke inhalation for all of them. So, it was an earlier reported that a firefighter was injured, but he was evaluated and went back to work. Ryan at one point, firefighters were told to get out immediately, that is about the fire was. That was a regrouping tactic for us. We went into a defensive position.
