Accused of severely beating his father todd. Sarah palin forced to call 911 blaming medication. What really happened inside the former vp candidates home. And severe winds cause this massive stage collapse killing a deejay toppling this structure. Debring crashed to the ground with thousands of concertgoers watching in horror. And good morning, america. We want to get right to that breaking news about that deadly Train Derailment in washington state. Look at that scene yesterday. Height of rush hour. Trains dangling over one of the busiest interstates in the northwest and now we know that the train was traveling at 80 miles an hour in a 30mileperhour zone. Yeah, it was the inaugural run on that particular track. Youve seen the devastation from the exterior. We want to take you inside some of those cabins. These are the picre it is incredible. Pictures incredible. Crazy to think some survived this after looking at some of those. So fortunate, so lucky. Heres what we know at this hour. At least three people were killed. More than 90 injured. 13 cars jumped the tracks on its first run. And it was the new route for the train and well go to abcs Clayton Sandell on the scene in dupont, washington, who has more. Good morning, clayton. Reporter good morning, michael. You can see behind me here this is still a very active scene. We want to show you, you can see there is a big yellow crane thats beginning to remove train cars from the overpass at this hour. A major interstate below still shut down as investigators try and figure out what made this train go off the tracks. Oh, my god. Reporter it was supposed to be a triumphant day but in an instant amtrak 501s inaugural run on a faster track turned into tragedy. A lot of melting and screeching and a lot of just investigators are on the scene trying to determine what caused the passenger train to hurdle off an overpass. Sdmrt train was going at 80 about 80 Miles Per Hour. Reporter in a 30mileperhour zone, right . Thats right. Reporter railcars crashing into vehicles on the interstate below. Officials say so far three people from the train were killed. Over 100 injured. It was wet, it was cold. We had downed power lines. We also had downed trees. It was very slippery and theres no access to this scene except from i5 so our responders were climbing up and down this hill trying to get to those victims. Reporter amtrak cascades train 501 left just after 6 00 a. M. 85 passengers and crew on board. 7 34, a locomotive and 12 cars careening off both sides of the overpass. Amtrak 501, emergency, emergency, emergency, we are on the ground. Is there everybody okay . Im still figuring that out. We got cars everywhere and down onto the highway. Reporter the impact caused passengers to fly out of their seats. People were flying, you know, youre like, oh, my god. This is real and start to see the roof kind of peeling and its just like is this ever going to stop . It was almost like being inside a dryer machine, shook completely to the other side of the taken and then back. Reporter when dan and his girlfriend came across the accident scene, the eagle scout sprang into action. There was injured people walking all over the place in shock and i was like, dude, somebody needs to just be a leader, sort of organize one of the trains had tipped upside down and kind of spilled the passengers out then the train came down on top of them. Thats where i was like, whoa, this is gnarly and those victims were pretty badly beat up and when they were pinned under the train i grabbed the dudes hand and was like rubbing his back and im so impressed by you. Youre a champion and just talking to him. Reporter now, one Safety System that difference is called positive train control or ptc, you can think of it like an autopilot. If the train is going too fast, ptc automatically slows you down but Officials Say even though ptc was installed on these tracks, it had not yet been activated. George. Big problem there. Clayton, thanks very much. Want to bring in chris carnes from the Pierce County transit Advisory Board on that train yesterday and, chris, thanks for joining us. You knew it was going fast. You were tweeting about it. Yes, we were passing traffic as we were going along the highway. And you even said you thought you were going around 7 miles an hour. Did you think it was too fast . I well, we had never been theres been no passenger traffic travel on this route before so it we didnt really have any experience about it. So when was the first moment you knew something was wrong . So, everything seemed to be going fine up until the point where theres this over i5 and so it really only what we felt was for a split second we felt a little we felt like we were going into a turn but then we heard felt some jittering and the next thing we knew, we were flying off the rails and then down an embankment. There was no slowing down as you head into that curve . It i dont recall any. So you say you went down into an embank many. What kind of fall was that for you . For me it was we were just sort of catapulted into the seats in front of us. And you look okay right now. You had no injuries. What about everybody else in the car . Most most of the passengers in our car had only minor injuries. There was one person who in the car in front of us, they were catapulted to car and they were pretty badly injured. They were unconscious but still breathing. So youre tilted on this embank many. How did you get out . So, we at first we tried the emergency door but that wouldnt budge because the train car had been crumpled and so what we had to do was we pulled out the strap the string around the emergency window and we kicked that out. Were people panicked, screaming, crying, calm . No, there were there were people screaming behind us in the car behind but there was no way we could access them. And what could you see of the cars i think they were ahead of thaw went over the overpass . Could you see that at all . Yeah, so the cars that we were on the other side so couldnt see the cars that went over the overpass. But what i could see from the window was we had disconnected from the other the back see that someone had been catapulted from the train onto the ground. Just an unimaginable scene but were glad youre okay, chris, thanks for sharing your story this morning. Thank you. Paula. We want to move to washington. It is decision day on capitol hill for the republicans. 1. 5 trillion tax bill. President trump is on the cusp of getting his first major legislative victory and mary bruce is on capitol hill for us with the very latest. Good morning to you, mary. Reporter good morning, paula. Well, the final votes are just hours away. Republicans poised for that first major victory, but will it be a win for the American People . Republicans and the president insist this bill is aimed at the middle class, but a new Analysis Shows the longterm benefits will actually go to the rich. After the first decade the report finds the wealthiest americans would receive a tax cut while 70 of middle income americans would see their taxes go up and the president and his family could stand t personally from tax cuts for the wealthy down from more than 39 to 37 and a provision of this bill aimed at benefiting certain owners of businesses like commercial real estate firms. Okay, so, mary, weve been hearing the republicans have the vote even without senator john mccain who is recovering from cancer treatment. How confident should he be . Reporter there have been protesters trying to convince republicans not to do this but to no avail. Right now they do have the votes in the senate right now. Theres not a single republican no vote. There are a handful of moderate republicans in the house who oppose this but that is not enough to block this bill. This tax bill appears to be headed for the president s desk, paula. All right, mary bruce reporting from capitol hill. Thank you very much. George. Also breaking this morning the white house calling on north korea formally blaming kim jongun for that crippling Ransomware Attack that affected hundreds of thousands of computers around the world and Pierre Thomas is in washington with the latest. Good morning, pierre. Reporter good morning r. The u. S. Is blaming them which paralyzed hundreds of thousands of computers in companies and homes worldwide. In an oped release, Thomas Bossert write, the attack was widespread and cost billions. North korea is directly responsible. Its not the first im, george, you remember in 2014 the u. S. Accused north korea of hacking Sony Pictures for an unflattering movie about their dictator. Bossert is calling on the International Community to impro improve cybersecurity and could see the u. S. Look for more sanctions. It is likely to add to the ongoing tension. It certainly will. Lets talk about earth more with cecilia vega and the editor in chief of the daily beast. John avlon. Lets pick up where pierre left off, the white house calling for new sanctions directly blaming north korea. Quite a contrast from the way the president deals russian meddling. Its stark. The administration is being tough and cheereyed, aggressive but in yesterdays strategic document, the president sidesteps the issue of russia and his cabinet is hawkish but the president remains fundamentally uncomfortable so the contrast is striking. Cecilia, no question this is the biggest legislative victory yet for the president. Good way for him to end the year. Reporter yeah, certainly, poised for a big celebration when it happens and tweeting about it this morning. He just put this out. He says the bills impact to the economy is not totally understood and appreciated. Quote, biggest tax cuts and reform ever passed. Enjoy and create many beautiful jobs. Spoken like President Trump there. But Fact Checkers agree this isnt actually the biggest tax cut ever passed. He is poised for a big celebration but this is dangerous political territory. There are a lot of polls out there that show that a number of americans, more than half disagree with this plan, george and twothirds say it will benefit the r class. Yeah, lets bring that to john avlon. This is a tax cut. Right. Yet its in some ways more n unpopular than tax increases have been. Will it matter a year from now. Thats unusual. Everyone loves a tax cut. Tax hikes are hard to get through. The math is upside down. This has been sold as a middle class tax bill and simplification. It is a big political win for republicans and the president but doesnt deliver on those two promises . Thats what democrats are hoping for in november in the midterm elections and the russia Investigation Continues to hang over the president. The white house hoping this week that some of that cloud may be lifted. Theyve scheduled this meeting between the white house lawyers and special counsel Robert Muellers team. Reporter yeah, and this is a pretty standard meeting from what we understand. The lawyers want to get a sense of where it stands and likely want to know whether President Trump himself is under investigation. Theyve had to lawyers have had to change what they are telling the president and told him it would be done thanksgiving initially and then christmas and now pushed it back and wrapped early into next year. We know its expected to go well into 2018. Is the president braced for that, cecilia . Thats the question. He has long said this is a witchhunt. We hear him repeatedly say that theyve done nothing wrong here so that certainly is the standard line, but, look, this is a cloud hanging over this white house. There is absolutely no doubt about that. They cannot shake this and want to focus on tax reform and the agenda Going Forward but questions are still hitting them hard. The white house hoping for a letter of exoneration from the special counsel. Thats unlikely to come any time soon and the big question does the special counsel want to talk to the president . That is going to be one of the big moments. Thats not how it works. You dont get an assurance of a letter of exoneration to allow everything to go forward. The investigation will go forward. The question is whether theyll interview the question is key but this thing is vast and fastmoving. If the white house needs to calm the president down by promises hes off the hook they will be sorely disappointed. Coal in that stocking for christmas. Thanks very much. We want to move to breaking news overseas. Police in the uk have foiled a christmas terror attack making arrests this morning. Our senior Foreign Correspondent ian pannell has the latest from london. Ian, good morning. Reporter yeah, good morning, paula. This is the remnants of that canceled 1500 flights over the past couple of days and also stranded thousands of passengers in the terminals but good thus this morning, the airport is up and running at 100 and so far weve only seen a handful of cancellations and delays as a result of that power outage and this as people try to get to their final destinations and hearing some may not be able to fly out on thursday and when you look around at this suddenly im thinking of poke da travel bag isnt a bad idea to find it.
