It works on the principal you blood. The idea is normally were made up of cells and we get exposed to all kinds of toxins, whether cancercausing, tobacco, other things and they get damaged. The cells can repair themselves. If they cant, theyre supposed to selfdestruct. Sometimes cancer cells dont. They decide theyll stick around and rogue and multiply. They can be microscopic. When they reach a certain size, you see the tumor on an mri or xray, mammogram. In the study, what they found was that, you know, if these women had the tumor removed, with an early stage surgery, they thought they were cured. You could detect the microscopic cells, like mutations, in the blood. So you can find out about the cancer perhaps before you see a tumor grow again because its too small to see it on steve you get a big headstart in treating it . Exactly. Its up to eight months is what they saw. Its an experimental test. They have to do more studies to see if they can do it for regular people coming into the doctor. If it works, you get a headsup on treatment for the people. Steve sounds encouraging. Alison a lot of people get steroid shots for back pain. But some say they offer temporary relief and might not be worth the cost of treatments. Low back pain, thats a complicated issue. There are so many causes. When these steroid infections help for nerve pain. If you think about your spinal cord, it has all these branches that go down the arms and the legs. Those are your nerves that can cause pain. In the spine, if you arthritis or discs or other kinds of bone and joint issues, sometimes they can press on the nerves and cause pain wherever the nerve goes. The injections, its like a super ibuprofen, to calm down any inflammation. Steve are these hydrocortisone same idea. Theyre different brands, but its the idea. Youre calming down the inflammation, but because its in the spine, its more invasive and has to be done under xray. The study is a review, a synthesis of a bunch of studies. The steroid injections were not more helpful than other types of injections in the area. The controversy comes in, the other types of injections use local anesthetics. They may not be like a placebo. They have an effect. The controversy is should they be compared to each other or are they maybe helpful, but other types of injections are helpful, too . Alison you talk to anyone with issues with back pain and they want fix it. Its unbearable. What do you do . You need something. You cant live with that discomfort. Theres a couple of things. You have to figure out the cause of the pain. It might be different. And patients some people will be more in favor of medications. They want the least invasive treatment. Some want surgery because, you know, maybe they think thats more of a one shot deal for them. And some folks are going to be more in favor of the injections because its in the middle. Not as invasive. Steve feels like youre doing something. But no systemic effects of medications. Steve are they covered by insurance . They are, but the controversy is with these types of studies, how long will they be covered . Steve true. Thats a good point. Good stuff. Good info. We appreciate it. Lets talk to nick.
