Local United Steel Workers spokesperson Herb Daniher says today is also about raising awareness about safety, even in what he calls safety-conscious industries like mining. “However, unfortunately, we still see occasions where people have unfortunate accidents or fatalities. The mine that we represent members at, there have been three fatalities,” he says. He points out the statistics for workers who are hurt or killed on the job in Ontario are still “astronomical” despite the progress that’s been made.
