Consumer reports is raising some concerns about ground beef tonight. Health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman has a look at their latest study. If you cook ground beef as directed youll be fine but under cooked meat can make you sick especially if it contains high amounts of bacteria. Thats what Consumer Reports is concerned about. The hamburger youre grilling could contain harmful bacteria and unless you cook it thoroughly, it could make you sick Consumer Reports tested 300 packages of ground beef purchased in Stores Across the country. More than 40 percent contained staph bacteria. And almost 20 percent contained another bacteria linked to nearly 1 million cases of Food Poisoning each year and a significant amount had super bug, bacteria thats resistant to three or more classes of antibiotics. Consumer reports blames those levels on the overuse of antibiotics on cattle farms. That practice can lead to the creation of antibiotic resistant bacteria, a Major Public Health problem. If you get sick from these bugs, your infections can be difficult to treat. But tests also revealed some good news. Ground beef from cows which are grass fed and raised without antibiotics were three times less likely to have super bug bacteria. This study is significant because its among the largest scientific studies to show that sustainable methods of raising cattle can produce cleaner and safer ground beef. So when you shop foreground beef Consumer Reports recommends choosing meat labeled as no antibiotics, grass fed or organic. Even better is meat thats both grass fed and organic because its the least likely to have bacteria. And no matter what kind of beef you buy, Consumer Reports reminds you to cook it to 160 degrees fahrenheit so the bacteria will be killed. And its best to use a meat thermometer. Dont just try to guess the temperature. Consumer reports also says that sustainably raised beef is becoming more widely available. Its not just at natural and organic food stores. Many mainstream supermarkets also now carry it. Rick and monica, back over to you. Okay,. Thank you so much.
