Reporter good morning were waking up as you can tell the strong winds and rain in houston, there are tornadoes warnings flash flood warnings and a lot of people worried if they have to evacuate their homes now. If they do, many people are being told they might need to. Theres nowhere to go and everything is flooded. More rain is on the way. Rescues continue throughout the night in houston, the countrys 4th largest city in crisis. The water came up so fast, it was incredible. Reporter Emergency Management officials are asking the public for help saying they need boats for rescues as roads turned into rivers. The geography in houston not helping the situation. Rain water is forced on to streets and then on small bayous easily overwhelmed by heavy downpours. First responders are stretched so thin neighbors are helping others. Its been 40 yores ive been here, and never saw this water this high. Reporter others are being plucked from the rooftops choppers as far as away from san diego and cape cod are pitching in to help. Many are having trouble getting through 911. Residents are told not to call unless the situation is life threatening. We need help in 5th ward. We need people here to evacuate people. Reporter matt, volunteers left from here yesterday joining others from our area who are already on the ground. There are multiple local agencies and organizations lending their resources and support including the American Red Cross eastern pennsylvania chapter. Yesterday volunteers set off from here in a truck stocked with food. They banked on their long journey to baton rouge, louisiana to help victims of harvey. Nationally, ten thousand volunteers are expected to pitch in. The red cross has been on the phone for days recruiting volunteers who can head to the affected areas and in the coming weeks. Headquarters in philadelphia handle two National Call centers. They are providing shelter and er information from hundreds ever miles away. Keep in mind this is just the beginning, more volunteers could be deployed in the coming days, some go for two weeks, others a month or more, depending on what their training is.
