Now Authorities Say the 64yearold paddock set up inside of a room on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay casino hotel. He was looking straight across the street and where the route 91 Harvest Festival was going on. Authorities i was paddock used a hammer of sorts to bust out the window of his room so he could shoot down into the crowd. They say they found at least 19 rifles and handguns in his hotel room. Once they breached the door and found him dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Mandalay bay. Upstairs mandalay bay halfway up i see the shots cupping from mandalay bay, halfway up. Las vegas police and s. W. A. T. Were on the scene within minutes of the first shots. This recordings just show just how frantic it was. Active shooter. Multiple casualties. Investigators say that many more people would have died had it not been for the quick actions of Police Officers. Now, in those frantic moments as scores of people race from the concert finding any safe place to how wide was the first thing on their minds. This video was taken by a woman who found shelter inside the Tropicana Hotel along with dozens of other people. Visitors of other hotels were also told to shelterinplace for several hours amid false reports of other shooters and suspicious devices in the area. We have Live Team Coverage tonight. But first we begin with bob brooks live in our Satellite Center with the latest on the investigation into this mass shooting. Bob, good evening. Reporter good evening, monica and rick. As you said this shooter supposedly acted alone. Authorities calling this a lone wolf attack and they also say that this was very well planned. That when they went into that hotel room they found a cache of almost 20 weapons. When they first heard the gunfire, many of the concertgoers admit they didnt react. We refused to believe that it was a shooting. Reporter it wasnt until it became rampant and people started to fall that the 22,000 in attendance began the frantic attempts to escape. The shots just kept coming and so we were going down and when we got down, there was a man that was shot right there, they were trying to take him out, he was all bloody and he was unconscious. There was short breaks in between the shots but it literally felt like it just continued for 20 minutes straight. Reporter the man accused of the deadliest mass shooting in u. S. History is 64yearold Stephen Paddock. Police say he checked into the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay resort overlooking the Country Music festival on thursday. The distance between the two about a quarter mile. He knocked out the hotel windows and began firing. As of now the death toll stands at 58. But with more than 500 additional victims injured, that number may go up. Today President Trump vowed to visit las vegas on wednesday. It was an act of pure evil. Reporter he also acknowledged the quick actions by that First Responders to save lives. The speed with which they acted is miraculous. And prevented further loss of life. Reporter amid the chaos numerous reports of acts of heroism. First responders and people using their bodies to shield victims. Police barricades turned into stretchers and carrying victims to safety. Theres no doubt had it not been for those who helped the outcome likely would have been even worse. The First Responders and what theyve done, its their finest hour. Their finest hour. Now authorities again say this was well planned that the gunman paddock had built platforms next to the windows in the hotel room so he could get a Better Vantage Point to shoot. Well, one of the many questions federal authorities are still trying to answer tonight, who was the shooter, Stephen Paddock. His brother eric paddock lives in Orlando Florida and he spoke to the news media today and says hes equally shocked about what happened. I have nothing for you. I mean, i hope someone finds out figures out because i wed like to know. Stephen paddock was a retired accountant who often played video poker. His brother told reporters he last received a text from him last month asking him how their mother was and if they had power. Well, this outdoor concert was in an open area next to the famed las vegas strip. There was security at the actual event but no system in place for really any way to secure areas outside the performance field around this socalled soft targets. With so many Outdoor Events in philadelphia like the one we saw in las vegas what can authorities do to keep visitors safe . Reporter last nights massacre in las vegas hits close to home for Philadelphia Police because they must secure the ben franklin parkway many times a year for various mass turnout events, made in america, welcome america, the nfl draft which the city hopes to bring back. Theyve got to constantly rethink it. We also are compelled to do things that we cant talk about where we are putting people in places that you dont see or were monitoring situation that you wouldnt think we would monitor. Im lost for words to say how we can prevent this other than keeping these kinds of weapons out of crazy peoples hands. Reporter Las Vegas Massacre and the growing list of all those that preceded it has been has the mayor and other gun control advocates crying out for washington to act. Reporter late today a member of the Police Departments top brass held a briefing with the local media hoping to settle nerves here in the wake of vegas. This is always evolving so we have to we cant just say this is the way we do business and its always going to work. We got to look at the way we do business every day. To be looking maybe in windows that you never looked in before because previously it wouldnt have been uncommon as a result of some things weve had happen to be looking on rooftops but whos thinking about looking inside of a room itself. Maybe because its not like a window that you just pull up. In the wake of the tragedy lawmakers are calling on each other and all of us citizens to come together in a show of support for the victims and their families. Today the American Flag atop the white house was lowered to halfstaff. Many flags across the can untrue country were also lowered. As we mentioned more than 500 people were hurt in the shooting and now folks are waiting in long lines some for more than an hour trying to give the gift of life. Around here were watching a new crash along 95 northbound side right by the blue route 476 and its blocking most of the lanes of northbound traffic trying to get up toward the airport. Traffic only barely squeezing by on the right shoulder so very quickly were starting to stack from 322 up to this point at the blue route. You may want to stay local through chester on 13 or 291 instead. Elsewhere in tell Company Coming off the blue route i would not get onto route one, state road. Theres a crash by meadow green park at meetinghouse lane just 7 Miles Per Hour there as you come off of the northbound side of the blue route, 476. Elsewhere on 476, the northeast extension, the news is a little bit better. Sounds like a southbound crash about 4 miles south of Lehigh Valley is now pushed off to the side. Were still dealing with some residual delays coming down from the Lehigh Valley interchange, but luckily traffic can get by now headed down toward quakertown. Just expect some slowing. We have a couple issues this afternoon along 13 in new castle county. One was a crash at 13 and 273 by the burger king and the mickey ds. Thats cleared out but farther south in odessa no southbound traffic is getting through because of a truck accident at hyatts corner road. I want him to still be a kid and be able to enjoy himself. I want him to be able to go up those stairs and not be scared that somebodys going to hurt him. School psychologist jessica at Philadelphia College of osteopathic medicine says for young kids, under second grade, its best to shield them from upsetting and scary news. But for older school aged kids, that can be tough. So she says ask them. So, my kids get home, im going to say did you hear about anything today . Is anything going on . That way you can clear up misinformation. She says stick to the facts when telling kids what happened. Tell the truth, if they say could this happen here, it could but its very rare. And reassure them theyre safe. Also, for older kids and teenagers on social media, encourage them to focus on the positive. The First Responders, the acts of heroism. Kenner says shell also remind her teenaged children to be aware of their surroundings. She says along with that, talk about just in case family disaster plans. But always be mindful of your own emotions. So, if you become fearful, they will pick up on that fear. She says its also important to continue your usual family routine.
