Reporter since the fire its been an all out Community Effort to try and recollect if i some of whats been lost. Yesterday at the Goodwill Fire Company so many donations of items came in and within just hours potential donors had to be turned away. There was too much. And today we met jim who picked up a new walker and clothes for his fatherinlaw. The clothes, his note clothes he called them, he crawled out and he has nothing left. Reporter so many people lost everything they had inside of the barclay center. New tonight we know the fire started in the back of the building. And we have breaking news tonight from philadelphia police. They have made an arrest in last weeks murder of an 80yearold man on east lehigh avenue in Port Richmond and the suspect is the mans granddaughter. Action News Reporter Sarah Bloomquist is live at Police Headquarters and sarah, youve got the details. Reporter jim, we have learned that police are right now in the process of charging 21yearold patricia diotsin with murder and possession of an instrument of crime. The victim was her grandfather, 80yearold robert gerard. Police tell us she has confessed to stabbing gerard 41 times. The motive she tells police, her grandfather was mean to her. She lived with her grandfather in the row home at 2500 east lehigh in Port Richmond. She initially told police she came home and found her grandfather naked in a pool of blood on the Kitchen Floor last wednesday at 9 p. M. Police could find no signs of forced entry and nothing had been taken from the home. There was a trail of blood leading from the victims second floor bedroom to the kitchen where he died. So, again, this development happening right now. Police have 21yearold patricia diotsin in custody. Shes being charged with murder and possession of an instrument of crime for the murder of her 80yearold grandfather robert gerard. Philadelphia police are investigating a deadly shooting near a church in north philadelphia this afternoon. Police were called to the area of germantown avenue near venango street at 2 oclock. Investigators say the victim was in his late 30s or early 40s. He was shot in the head, neck and hand. The search continues for the shooter. We have an update on the health of tom ridge. The family of the former u. S. Homeland security secretary and pennsylvania governor says they are cautiously optimistic that ridge will make a full recovery from a heart attack. Ridge has made steady progress but remains in intensive care at a hospital in austin, texas robert tracy has officially been sworn in as wilmingtons police chief. Mayor Mike Purzycki helped with the honors today. Tracy was appointed in april but had to complete six months of training before he could take the oath. The ceremony at the chase center also included the promotions of 15 officers. Attorney general Jeff Sessions has announced a 98 million grant to hire Community Police officers across the country. And several local agencies are among the 179 to receive that money. In pennsylvania, Allentown Police will get 750,000. Coatesville and the Southern Chester County Regional Police departments each will receive 125,000. And more than 100,000 will go to Smyrna Police in the town of cheswold in delaware. Well, they have taken the wraps off the new deck the hall light show tonight at Philadelphia City hall. This was video from moments ago of the 6abc Independence Blue Cross deck the hall light show that debuted in center city, each performance is six minutes long and the west Market Street side of the iconic city Hall Building lights up with holiday lights synchronized to holiday tunes. Its a very intricate and detailed show that drew dozens of people with its debut performance. Fabulous, beautiful. So pretty. Its really amazing. I didnt expect this to be here. Like we just walked past and saw it so its really cool. We want people to enjoy each other, each others traditions and show a little love going into 2018. Really cool event that we can all feel really wonderful about and its another Great Holiday tradition. This is my first time here so its very exciting and very good this year. I think its really colorful and i mean, i wasnt really expecting all of this honestly. A nice holiday feature to add down here to dillworth park. Yes, definitely. Something that i can enjoy over the weeks to come. Dancers spent the day practicing their routines today at the Sheraton Hotel in center city. And you can watch the 6abc Dunkin Donuts thanksgiving day parade with us. Salvation army staff and an army of volunteers are making sure 800 philadelphia families have a meal on the table on thursday. Theyre spending every day leading up to thanksgiving cooking and packing turkey, potatoes, stuffing and apple pies at the Salvation Army facility in wynnefield heights. The thanksgiving to go meals will be delivered to families on thursday morning. Coming up on action news tonight confident eagles fans are eyeing the super bowl and starting to make travel plans to minneapolis. And so are the eagles themselves as confident . There is no way of knowing for sure if the eagles will make it to the super bowl this coming february. But they sure are playing well. And while few people would be happier than maria henry to see them make it to the big game, dont talk to her about guarantees okay, maria, were going to the super bowl. Were going. Even though the playoffs are more than six weeks away shes already getting phone calls about the big game. Were working on the super bowl packages yes we are. Reporter maria admits all she can really do now is put peoples names on a waiting list but assuming the birds win the nfc her office is going to be hopping. Today that sunday when they win that game and we know that were going to the super bowl or that saturday that weekend thats when well be in here, the phones will be going and well be ready to roll. Reporter but all this begs the question is it too early to talk about the eagles finally winning a super bowl . Some say yes. Ill jinx it if i say that. Im just saying were super bowl capable. Middle weight boxing champion and philadelphia native Bernard Hopkins was on hand to deliver the turkeys. Price right marketplace gave away 600 birds today. They were given out on a first come first served basis. Tiny libraries are popping up all over the place in west philadelphia. New identity barbershop is one of 30 businesses along lancaster avenue that that now has a crate full of books. Officer jessie woodruff stopped by to read to these group of kids. Families are encouraged to visit the store grab a book and read together. The goal is to encourage literacy for the kids. Daddy eats three pieces of cake. So how much fun is it to watch Jason Garrett standing there with that blank expression on his face but you know that inside hes just seething. Winning is contagious and the guys feed off of that and so it really doesnt matter who makes the play. Its just at the end of the day just find a way to win the game. I think it shows we knew coming into the locker room at halftime we left a lot out there. I think we knew we were much better than that and we had to execute and i think it shows we have a lot of belief in each otherrism. Reporter the eagles have scored 30 or more points in three straight games. They havent done that in 64 years. This winning thing is a lot of fun. Its a lot of fun obviously and guys enjoy coming to work every single day that theyre here and the guys are having fun playing together and thats what youre seeing. Its definitely a team effort. There was one downside to the victory. Eagles rookie kicker jake elliott was injured early. It happened while he was trying to make a tackle. Elliott is in concussion protocol. The eagles other kicker Caleb Sturgis is eligible to come off injured reserve. The birds have a couple of days before theyll have to make a decision. The sixers beat the utah jazz two weeks ago without joel embiid. They might have to do it again. Embiid is questionable for tonights game against the jazz. Hes dealing with knee soreness. Embiid was averaging nearly 23 points per game. Hes calling himself a game time decision. The decision is on me. I just go on out there, warm up, see how i feel, see how my body feels and if i feel good i play. Finally a lucky shot or two has turned a local sixers fan into a star. During saturdays game 17yearold mike shelley of Marple Newtown was selected to take part in a shooting contest. He had to make a layup a free throw a 3pointer and Half Court Shot all in 45 seconds. Mike shelley recently overcame stage four lymphoma and now he hit that shot. Superstar now. Sign him up. Good times. Yeah. A nineyearold battling leukemia gets to meet her favorite flyers player. Madeline swenson of warminster and her family what invited to this mornings practice in voorhees. Afterwards Claude Giroux stopped by and presented swenson with a personalized jersey. Swenson will wear it next tuesday to the flyers hockey fights cancer night. It is only her tenth birthday but she will get to drop the puck. The ceremonial puck on that day. Thanksgiving may be days away but it looked like halloween this morning at a school in the parkside section of philadelphia. Kindergarteners dressed up as superheros at discovery charter school. The goal of this parade to get the boys and girls engaged in reading by pretending to be the character teachers are hoping the kids will want to read more books. Noble cause. All kinds of fun for the kids. Yes. Lets get that week ahead from accuweather and cecily tynan. All in all its looking pretty nice. Definitely on the cool side today. The action cam taking a look in Fairmount Park where we had blue skies and sunshine. Still some foliage on the leaves but notice how theyre getting whipped in the winds. We had winds today sustained about 15 to 20 miles an hour and of course thursday on thanksgiving the winds are really a big factor. If the winds are too strong we cant get the balloons to go up. Fortunately its looking nice for the 6abc Dunkin Donuts thanksgiving day parade. Winds generally out of the northwest five to 10 miles per hour. Loads of sunshine but notice the temperatures. If youre heading for the parade you really do need to bundle up. At 8 oclock, 34 degrees. At 9 oclock, when the parade broadcast begins, only 37 and even by noon when the parade is wrapping up, temperatures only in the low 40s. So, we do have some cool air on the way but the next two days temperatures actually will be increasing. Right now the winds have diminished substantially from earlier today. Wind speeds right now in philadelphia at 10 miles per hour. Allentown reading and wilmington seven, trenton three and the winds have calmed in Atlantic City and the winds will continue to calm overnight. Currently the wind chill, though, makes it feel like 41 in philadelphia, allentown 33, wilmington 38 and the poconos 28 degrees. So definitely an evening for the winter coat. Satellite and radar showing High Pressure is really dominating our weather. There is a front thats beginning to get its act together. That will be moving through very early on wednesday morning but its limited in moisture. So, all in all, this week is going to be pretty quiet. For the most part dry. Tonight clear and cold with lighter winds without any cloud cover. Temperature down to 29 degrees in the suburbs, about 35 degrees for center city. And if you didnt like todays 48 degrees, tomorrow up into the upper 50s. Temperatures running about 5 degrees above normal with that wind out of the southwest. Philadelphia 59, the same in millville. Allentown 57, trenton 57. Allentown 56 and dover up to 60 degrees with a good amount of sunshine. Now future tracker showing the cold front that pushes in in the wee hours of the morning on wednesday is limited in moisture. By 4 oclock in the morning, could have a quick band of showers but it pulls offer off the coast very quickly. By 8 30 were drying out, the sunshine is back and cooler air will play catchup with the system. It wont be arriving on wednesday. So, wednesday 54 degrees, the sunshine is back by mid morning. Smooth for traveling. On thursday, thats when that colder air will be arriving with that High Pressure but with the High Pressure right over us, again, the winds will be light, loads of sunshine, all in all a pretty nice thanksgiving for us.
