It continues to be an especially bad flu season and now were learning the effectiveness of this years flu vaccine could be the worst weve seen in a decade. But some hospitals in our area have found a way to help protect their workers despite being surrounded by the virus every day. Health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman joins us at the big board with thto tonight. Ali. Yeah, rick, the theory is the more flu vaccine you have over the years, meaning getting a flu shot every season, the more likely you are to be protected. One local emergency room chief says thats one reason his staff has stayed healthy. I think this is going to probably go down on record as one of the worst flu years weve seen. Dr. Alfred cichetti is chief of emergey services. He say theres always been about 10 to 15 flu patients in i would say on a given day the staff is that probably been coughed in the phase sneezed on or had some snugglely kid with a runny nose kiss them at least a dozen times. Reporter but despite this the majority of doctors nurses and techs here have remained flu free. He says its partly due to good hand washing and other prevention practices. But it can also be attributed to yearly flu shots. Since 2014, the hospital has required staff to get vaccinated. The doctor says that helps your body build up a library of exposure to different types of the virus. So when a really novel one comes in, your immune system can go back i remember three years ago i saw something similar to that and command an anti body response. Reporter some experts say yearly flu shots can be helpful when the vaccine hasnt been great match. The cdc released new numbers showing this years vaccine has so far been 36 percent effective overall for adults and 59 percent effective overall for kids. Nationwide the number of children who have died related to complications is at 84. And just for perspective, sadly last year we saw 101 cdilde due complications from the flu. Now, as for this season, the virus is still at high activity in most states and it expected to wind down for several more weeks. For the future, yearly flu shots can help offer better overall protection and not just for healthcare workers. Monica. Thank you, ali.
