Reporter well, this is the choke point, the merge area where the northbound express lanes end and that traffic has to go over into the regular lanes. Well start driving it now to see the merge point here up ahead. You can see all the traffic that we have here. Those are the folks in the regular lanes. Were in the express lane. Well have to go move over and that really slows things down during the rush hour. Hopefully, some help is on the way. Beginning as soon as 7 00, vdot will open a lefthand shoulder to traffic, adding an additional lane. This is a 1. 5 mile stretch. From the end of the express lanes down to the g. W. Parkway. Theyll be doing this from 7 00 a. M. To 11 00. And then theyll reopen that shoulder again from 2 00 until 8 00 p. M. Coming up on an electronic sign here. Theyll have the signs with the red x or a green arrow indicating whether or not you can use that lefthand shoulder lane. Thatll let people know what is going on here. Today closing arguments will begin for Prince Georges County man charged with ordering his uncles murder. Brian mayhew is serving a life sentence for killing a man in 2011. Brian had someone kill his uncle nicoh mayhew from testifying against him in the murder trial. Winston and cannon are also facing murder charges nicoh mayhews death. Also today a panel of federal judges will begin a trial into the that looks into the political boundaries in virginia. The lawsuit here says the house of delegates redistricting plan is unconstitutional because it gerrymanders a dozen districts. The concentration of africanamericans is packed into 12 districts, so therefore, diminishing black voters influence in the other 88 districts that trial begins in alexandria at 10 00 this morning. This morning, Prince Georges County police are looking for a suspect in a shooting in oxon hill. Police say someone shot a man several times on chester street near the d. C. Border around 9 00 last night. The victim is in Critical Condition. Police say theyre still working to figure out a motive. Today there will be a prayer vigil in the district and that vigil will remember those who have been shot and killed this year. It begins at 7 30 at the grace View Apartments on 16th street southeast. The search for the body of a hiker killed in an ice cave collapse is now suspended until the sun comes up. That collapse happened at big four ice caves in Washington State yesterday. Robert wilson handcuffed an beat the boy last week for eating cake without permission in the apartment where he lived. Wilson is the mothers boyfriend. He is being held on 1 million bond. Jack celebrated his 9th birthday days before his death. Alexandrias police chief let the community vent its frustrations on a meeting in violence. That was in response to the murder of 22yearold shakkan elliott tibbs. Someone shot and killed him last week. Some at the meeting said the murder is a symptom of more violence in the neighborhood. The victims mother was at the meeting as well. She said finding the sons killer will help the crime situation. The state of maryland will appeal femas decision to give aid for the baltimore riots. Governor larry hogan requested a major disaster declaration and that would have covered 75 of the costs to clean up and rebuild parts of the city. The riots came after the death of freddie gray and caused an estimated 19. 5 million in damage. Its 6 18 right now. The attorneys for the six officers charged in grays death want the trial moved out of baltimore. According to the baltimore sun, the defense team for the officers said high interest in the case will make it impossible to seat an impartial jury.
