A developing story in the district, we just learned a deadly standing along the h street corridor started with a fight at a bus stop. One person has been arrested for mondays attack and his name is hector luis feliz. He is accused of getting into an argument at the bus stop with a man he did not know and stabbing him. As passengers were boarding the metro bus, a fight broke out. During the course of that fight, another individual, is suspect we have arrested, was believed to have come up and stabbed him. This case is part of a trouble trend because there have been 91 homicides in the district since the year started. Thats up from 72 at this same time last year. The district is already closing in on the 102 homicides that it had in all of 2014. We now know the name of the fairfax woman killed about a crash in fredericksburg. Her name is angela mcquillan. She was driving south on i95 early sunday morning when she got near the central park shopping area. Her car suddenly ran off the road and caught fire. No one else was inside. Police are trying to figure out what caused her to drive off the road. We are hearing about some new fallout from that metro derailment, wins is learned that metro leaders knew about a track defect and didnt do anything about it, there are now new calls for some change at the top. When we contacted him about all, they said he is not surprised by the criticism. This is the chairman of metros board of directors, mort downey, and directly in the center of metros woes. Multiple insiders tell news4 the recent revelation that metro knew about a section of misaligned rail yet still left it in service for about a month, all the while carrying trains with passengers, could force downey out as head of the board. Baker released a Statement Today saying that light rail would be good for the environment and good for the quality of life in the county. Why . Because 14 of those 17 people who kind the water this year, they didnt have them on and believe it or not, it only takes about 60 seconds for an adult to drown, only 20 seconds for a child. Reporter it is a perfect day on the water off sandy point but too often the summer, a perfect day has turned to tragedy. 17 times this summer, someone has died in a boating accident on the water in maryland. Many times, those deaths could have been prevented if they had been wearing one of these, a life jacket. Takes just a few minutes to buckle all the buckles. Reporter 14 of the 17 victims were not. On a boat, if you hit rough water or another object, you dont have seat belts holding you in, a good chance you will find yourself in the water and thats going to be your lifesaver. Reporter the victims range in age from 7 to 63. The deaths include a Prince Georges County man who died last weekend on a family boating trip. They had life jackets on board but they were stowed away. The boat took on water and it went down less than three minutes. Reporter the numbers dont count the nearmisses. This officer helped rescue an entire family could have ended up among the statistics. With them floating along about 45 minutes, they were holding on to the skis, the xpris sinking, the life jackets actually saved their lives. Reporter as labor day approaches, police are trying to turn the tide on the fay the way it a new safety campaign, increasing pat tronlts water around at hightraffic marinas to push their safety message and enforce laws meant to keep everyone alive. Officers will be checking for life jackets and other required safety equipment, looking for reckless boaters and targeting alcohol or drugimpaired operators. A university of maryland basketball coach just resigned after he was accused of sex abuse in connection to his former job. Bryce mckey stepped down after the university of maryland suspended him today. The school hired him as the assistant coach for the womens team in april. Sex abuse allegations stem from his previous coaching job at Xavier University in ohio. One of his former players accused mckey of assaulting her at his home in kentucky last may. The victims father laid out the allegations after the mckeys arraignment today. But he said he gave her alcohol and after a while, he was talking to her and started to put his hands on her, made a move. And later on, he made another move. And she told him she wasnt interested. Mckey is also accused of trying to pay off friend of the victim in an attempt to avoid criminal charges. An actor was hurt when a stage collapsed at the madeira school. The 21yearold woman is doing okay after she got stuck with when a ramp collapsed on the stage. The school says the woman is with an acting troupe called traveling players. She was trying to adjust the stage ramp when it fell on her leg. An ambulance was called and the School Security crew was able to free her. Over in louden county, School Busses are rolling out earlier this week, a week before labor day. And thats why new teachers reported for orientation today. The red carpet rolled out for them, 700 new teachers are joining the growing school district. A lot of them have come full circle. 14 of the new teachers went to Loudoun County schools, at least three of them credit their former government teacher with inspiring them to get an education.
