Even without a big budget increase prince georges schools opened today with Great Expectations. 2,000 newly enrolled student, no 129,000 students, nearly 870 new teachers and six new literacy coaches to help the struggling students get ahead and get on track. We are outside one of two new International Schools that will be focusing on recent immigrants and Second Generation students who are still learning to master the english language. With no water, theres no way we can have the kids there and wssc is saying the repairs will take a while. Reporter so youre opening schools with Great Expectations even though youre working within a tighter budget. You wanted much more money to do a lot more, expanding prek, paying teachers more competitive salaries. Tell me how youll still do what you need to do within that budget. So were asking for more on the budget. And that is, you know, partly because we want to be able to get the work accomplished more quickly than well do it without the investment in our education system. But i think, you know, with the work that we have identified in this Strategic Plan its still work we can begin to implement. We wont have the you know, the extra prekindergarten classes or we wont be able to increase the salaries the way we would have liked to be more competitive. We wont add the literacy coaches, gifted specialists in Elementary Schools that we had wanted to do but that doesnt mean were not committed to the work. I think we shifted our gears with professional development to make sure that people really understand what our expectations are. The High Expectations you talked about. Pocono raceway Officials Say he was behind the initial crash on sunday when a piece of debris hit him and sent him into the wall. They say wilson died at the hospital last night. The last time an indycar driver died because of an accident on the track was in 2011. A developing story now. The west coast is getting help to battle the fast moving wildfires in Washington State. Fire crews from australia and new zealand picked up their equipment in idaho yesterday. The overseas help will bolster the 32,000 firefighters already in the field. You have to watch for school buses on the roads today, there are a whole lot of them too. News4s Kristin Wright is live at the school bus lot in bowie where many are leaving right now. Good morning. Reporter hey, good morning, guys. Thats right. The buses are leaving right now. Just one after the other. A steady stream of them. You can see the bus drivers headed to the buss this morning. The bus system in Prince Georges County is really important because more than 83,000 students here ride the school bus. Thats most of the students in the county. 83,015 students ride the buses. 1,100 buses ride every morning. Every afternoon in Prince Georges County. Most of those buses about 977 of them are equipped with security cameras. Thats really, you know, added comfort to a lot of parents who want to make sure that children on the bus, theyre doing what theyre supposed to do. And they have added more of those cameras on school buses this year. Its really peace of mind for a lot of parents. More than 20 school buses, about 20 of them have the Traffic Cameras that make sure that drivers outside of the buses are doing what theyre supposed to do now, we talked to the supervisor of this particular lot. This is one of 12 in the particular district here. We talked to the supervisor this morning and he explained to us that the bus drivers recently did some testruns, dry runs yesterday. Two weeks ago to make sure that sure everything was on track. He said everything was smooth so they had their fingers crossed that everything runs smoothly today. So far, so good. Police detectives say a man died after an attack on fairmont street last saturday. This happened a block away from howard university. 35yearold edo fell and hit his head. He died the next day. D. C. Police say they caught the suspect who robbed a man in a wheelchair. It was all caught on Surveillance Video in a store on wheeler road. Police say in this video 47yearold Earl Matthews forcefully takes something from a wheelchair bound man. Officers arrested matthews on sunday and charged him with robbery. A Prince Georges County woman is accused of intentionally running her husband over with her husband. 37yearold araceli alvarezmendoza is charged with murder. Police say she was arguing with her husband fernando fragosoduana sunday afternoon when he walked out of the house. According to police she followed him in her suv and ran him over. He became pinned underneath the car and died. Alvarezmendoza is being held without bond. A Park Police Officer is going to be okay after crashing his motorcycle. You see the video here that officer had to be airlifted to the hospital after the crash yesterday. The medical helicopter you see there landed right on the 14th street bridge. The officer crashed into a jeep on 395 around 6 30 last night. He has a broken collarbone. So you know its not a good thing when your car rolls away after you put it in park but this is happening to hundreds of thousands of grand cherokees. Thats according to jeep. The company is looking at the suvs from the 2014 and 2015 model year. The national Highway Traffic Administration says it caused five crashes. At this point, jeep is not recalling any of the suvs. A new survey Shows Americans are really sick of recalls. The American Consumer satisfaction index said thats the main reason that overall satisfaction in cars and trucks dropped for the Third Straight year in a row. Right now, its at the lowest level in more than a decade. The only two companies to see their scores go up acura and bmw. It considered responses from 4,300 people.
