Reporter well, allison and steve, this is a story that we have been following closely here at fox5 and last night Protesters Holding Signs that read black lives matter and honor our cemetery gathered at a Montgomery CountyBoard Meeting and the battle is over saving the site of a historically Black Cemetery known as the moses african cemetery in bethesda maryland and members of Macedonia Baptist Church they are protesting to save this sacred ground that was that was built for a community built by freed slaves. On thursday, the Planning Board approved plans to build a Storage Facility despite the argue the facility will cover the Burial Ground but the owners say any remnants of this cemetery are within a smaller plot of land they gave back to the county. Take a listen. Well its disappointing. I hope by the time we open they change their minds. Were excited to be a part of the community as they said we are the first ones that donated land to the project, to the greenway, so hopefully wounds will be healed and theyll be receptive to it. We and want them to be a part of it. Were doing the benches and display cases to celebrate the history of the black community and all the history of bethesda and the river row community. Reporter protesters also say their First Amendment rights were violated when the board made them turn their black lives matter signs backwards so the words were not visible and the board says it has a policy outlawing signs bigger than a standard sheet of paper. Fox5 tried asking the board chair more about the sign policy and werent allowed to hold these signs in a public building but the chair wouldnt answer our questions. Demonstrators say they will not be giving up any time soon and will continue boycotting the storage business even after its built.
