Federal workers you do have the option for unscheduled the d. C. Government is opened on time. Lets get to our Team Coverage across the region. Some of the most impressive images though coming out of ocean city maryland. Yes, the palm trees look pretty in the summertime. The boardwalk looks amazing. Everything covered with snow. All right. Cori coffin is there. I was hoping that you were reporting from that car that we were looking at but lets get you right now. Cori, man, this is crazy. This image really looks like a hurricane but its snow and wind. Reporter it is. Its actually a little bit different tan what this area is used to getting. They tell me theyre used to having this come up from the inland from the northwest so its kind of interesting that they are starting to get hit with it and theyve tried to be prepared here but the wind is really kicking things up and drifting the snow. Im going to venture out here into this part of the road here that has not been plowed yet but you can see how deep were getting. This is definitely more than 6inches, maybe eight to 10inches but of course this is because a lot of wind has helped way. As i walk over this way, ill show you some of the other conditions. Were right up against the boardwalk so you guys got to see part of the ocean there from that camera. So, ill show you the other side here and this is kind of part of the issue that First Responders are dealing with. Look at this road here. This is an entire sheet of ice. Okay. This is just a block of ice, a sheet of ice that has frozen over because the temperatures just got so low and we had rain before this snow. And these berms, of course, coming up here with all of this whipping wind making things difficult for our First Responders conditions out here. Well send it back to you guys in the studio. For now were live in ocean city this morning. Winds definitely kicking up out there as you can see. Cori thank you very much. In the meantime lets go from the Eastern Shore to Southern Maryland. Southern maryland also expected to get hit hard today. Annie yu is in Saint Marys County. Annie continues our live Team Coverage. Annie, oh, my goodness, good, youre in the car. Reporter yeah, and we just arrived. Everybody. We are here. It took us a couple of hours to make our way down southeast of d. C. But this is leonardtown and for those of you wake up, we checked some of those neighborhoods as we were making our way up here, youre waking up to a beautiful blanket of snow. Once leave your neighborhoods youll see a mix of things. Some streets have been plowed. Theyre plowing this shopping center. This mckays will probably be opened soon. Then you have roads that havent been touched and were talking about those secondaries. The main roads like route five, route 301 look pretty good. 301 is a little dicey i have to be honest. Thats when we started to take it easy with our four wheel drive. Buds creek road is treacherous. Its bad. Its not a good idea if you live in this area to get on that road so definitely dodge that, if you can. Were going to head back out to route five and hopefully find a location that we can jump out and this beautiful stuff. I would say accumulationwise tucker if youre listening weve got a solid 2inches. Annie thank you very much. Im listening. To the south and the east we get a little bit more. For annie if shes listening calaway maryland south of leonardtown we reported four and a half inches so starting to add up down there. Really is kind of following that path then across the bottom of the chesapeake over to the Eastern Shore. The best way we can tell how much snow we got is from you guys. Let me know what you got. Tucker fox5. We got to start showing some of these pictures. We have a rule. If you send me a picture of snow flying outside your house and you dont tell me where you are or how much snow you got then i cant do anything with that. True. That is fair. Just need a little info. All right. Still snowing out there although its starting to wind down west to east. The real story this afternoon will be the wind and the cold. Anything that had a chance to stick at your house overnight will be going nowhere soon as well be in the deep freeze 24 at Reagan National, 22 dulles, baltimore 22 as well. Want to show you the wind chills. Feels like nine in washington and five out at dulles. Unfortunately well have wind chill advisories, well be feeling like minus five, minus 10, maybe minus 15 later this evening and early tomorrow. A very sharp cutoff to the west and were going to watch the snow line kind of march west to east here as the storm starts to push off to the north and i would expect that most of the snow across our region will shut off in the next couple hours. The exception, those of you to the east. So as you get east across the bay, lower Eastern Shore youll see the snow linger through late morning. For the rest of us it should be wrapping up in the next couple hours. Theres the big storm. The bomb cyclone well talk more about that. Blizzard conditions expected for parts of long island the cape, parts of massachusetts, maine will get very hard hit. Well talk about some of the effects up there. Very quickly want to show you expected snow totals. Trace to 2inches locally. Higher south and east. Blizzard conditions in ocean city. So far for forming beautifully from a meteorological standpoint. How is the volume out there this morning, erin. Volume is really light. I want to start you off with metro and amtrak alert. Metro rail operating on or near schedule. Customers reminded to use caution traveling through the metro platforms and escalators. Watch for slick conditions. Use caution walking on sidewalks as well. Amtrak no service on the northeast regional line between washington, d. C. And newport news. Canceled today. Modified schedule northeast regional between new york and boston. Delays there. Check the schedule before you head out. Aside from the metro rail and amtrak alerts we have limited Wind Restrictions at the bay bridge as well key bridge. Tractortrailers pulled over with their blinkers on. Light volume but slick conditions to and from the sandy point plaza. This is a look at the key bridge from rosslyn into georgetown. Light volume. Moving slowly. Bridges on and off ramps tend to ice first as well as secondaries in Montgomery County this morning. Give me a tweet at erin fox5 d. C. On twitter and let me know how things are looking. Are, looking. Stay off the roads if you dont have to go anywhere. Exactly. Team coverage. Bob barnard live on kent island. Whats it looking like there along the chesapeake. Good morning. Reporter good morning, allison and steve. Yeah, the wind is blowing the snow. Its more like pellets than flakes sideways. The wind is the big issue. About two to 3inches on the ground. There are snow drifts that are about a foot deep. This is route 50. Headlights coming at you are westbound h the Road Conditions are okay except if you go to turn or to brake. You can lock up and you can slide so you got to be really careful t Governor Hogan declaring a state of emergency here on the Eastern Shore and the Southern Maryland counties as these cars head toward the bay bridge, now, erin mentioned the restrictions. There is a 40 miles an hour speed limit across the bridge where its normally a 50 miles an hour limit and 18 wheelers with empty trailers are real stricted right now. Thats it. If the winds get up to about 55 miles an hour, they could potentially close the bay bridge. Mdot talked about that yesterday. Hasnt done it yet. The sustained winds are about the 25 to 30 miles an hour range at least right now. There are some cancellations at bwi to especially northeastern cities but delays and cancellations as you see cars here on route 50 and, yeah, it is still snow covered despite the fact that there have been plows and salt trucks out here. They just cant keep up, guys, so road treacherous. Thank goodness a lot of people have the day off from school, so stay warm and cozy back at home, guys. Bob, everybody will do their best. Thanks very much for being out there in the middle of it letting us know whats happening across the region we appreciate it. The bomb cyclone threatening new england. Boston is expecting whiteout conditions today. Several inches per hour are expected to fall. Bostons mayor ordered schools to be closed today. Theyve asked people to stay off the roads today as best they can. Hundreds of flights have been canceled. Several of them were on the way to airports of course here in our region. So, make sure to check your flight status if you plan to fly out today as well. Steve. The powerful winter storm already pummeling several cities from ice causing problems all the way down in texas. The storm also hit two iconic southern cities, savannah, georgia, charleston south carolina. Heaviest snowfall in 30 years. Wow. Even parts of florida, tallahassee Port Canaveral also got a powerful yesterday. Residents though taking it in stride. Make snow angels. What do you think. Not used to it. Thats for sure. Ive never seen the ice this thick here. When you know youre not going to get it often, then its a little easier to enjoy but the ice is a huge miss. Cold has been blamed for recent deaths in including two Homeless People in houston texas. Messy that far down south. Still ahead our live Team Coverage of the bomb cyclone continues. Our mike thomas is live in Northern Virginia with a look at conditions there. Hes still smiling, though. I thought that you were making a snowball. Its not that deep yet. Good morning. Reporter no, not that deep. Good morning, allison. Yeah, we got about i think tucker tells me. 4 of an inch of snow here in Old Town Alexandria. It was enough to coat the roads. Snow is slowing up a bit but were going to tell you why problems may persist into the evening with what these roads are going to do. More on that coming up after the break. Well be right back. K. There are two types of people in the world. Those who fear the future. And those who embrace it. The future is for the unafraid. All because of you oxon hill is where were taking a look right now. This is the White Christmas that we wanted. Enjoy it. Embrace it. Oh, boy. Nobodys driving on that street anyway so you might as well oh, well, now prove me wrong. Fine, sorry in your giant four wheel drive or maam. Be careful driving this morning. If you have to go out. Its just a covering but its very, very icy so, yeah be careful. Even when youre walking be careful. If you could stay in and just watch us, why not. I think thats a great plan. Lets get snow totals. Tim Lexington Park just checked in tucker fox5. Let me know how much snow youre getting. How much. 4inches. Wow. Yeah, Lexington Park in Southern Maryland. That seems to be the this Reagan National that update was a few hours ago. Well get a new update. That was about a third of an inch in dulles a tenth of an inch, alexandria close to a half inch. Let us know what you guys are getting. Ive seen anywhere from. 10 to four and a half inches locally in the past hour or so. 24 in washington. 24 in new york. Boston is 26. It is really, really our storm is going wrap up here and batter coastal areas of new jersey, new york, long island up through the cape and then maine with delivered blizzd conditions. The snow were gettin on this hour wont last so it will be with us for another hour or two and then things will wind down pretty quickly from west to east and we should be in for what will turn into a very windy and very cold day. Theres a bigger look at our storm and, yes, undergoing a process called bombogenesis. Transformation into a very powerful mid latitude storm and it will again create blizzard conditions from ocean city no, steve i wont answer your questions to ocean city. I was trying to clarify something for the viewers. Well let it go. Its for the viewers, tuck. This is my time, steve. [laughter] i was really trying to make him look smart, al. Its for the viewers, tuck. Okay, steve, all right. Bombogenesis is a defined weather term, right. Yes. So, this is where were getting this bomb storm name that were talking about . Theyre taking that from the weather term, right. Yes, sort of a twitter play on it, yes. Im just saying. So that this term that were using for this story is actually coming from actual weather terminology. Did you make me look smarter there. Made me look smarter because i thought i said that, too, thats where it comes from. Yes, yes. Its derived from a term that we use when we learn about meteorology. Makes for a super snappy headline. Thats what it does. We didnt all study bomb blizzard, sounds to me like bomb cyclone sounds like it has like brownie chunks and oreo cookies in it. Mike thomas knows all about the bombogenesis. Hey, mike. Want to drop any more wetterweather lingo on us mike. Reporter explosive psycho jones so explosive bomb, thats where they get it from. Okay. Im still here in Old Town Alexandria. Tucker you have to tell me if im doing this right. Were trying to get a snow measurement here. Im next to the measurer here in Old Town Alexandria and according to this i believe thats 5 feet of snow that were dealing with right here in old town. Could be wrong on that but, hey, im standing next to it. Also im 10 and half feet tall so if any nba teams want to give me a contract were dealing with that. Guys, roads are looking a little better than they were earlier here in old town. They have been by salting the roads. Im looking both ways here. You would th think the problems are a lot of liquid on the road. Temperatures are going to be dropping and what is here is going to freeze. Even if its treated with temperatures falling low teens Single Digits possibly tonight overnight whats there is going to freeze solid. With that i want to recommend if youre out and about after the snow stops kids have the day off school, put them to work. Send them outside get them on the sidewalk. Very light and easy to kind of brush away but once you hit the evening hours tonight, whatevers on the ground is going to freeze and its going to be frozen all the way through the weekend so youll want to get rid of the snow thats on the ground today before it freezes over tonight. All right, guys, live from Old Town Alexandria. Ill send it back inside to you. Not bad on the height, hm . Not bad. Keep using that yard stick. I think it looks pretty good on you. Probably be out there for flood stage if we get enough snow unfortunately. Erin good morning. You saw where mike was standing, very light traffic, no traffic where he was. The little bit of volume that is out t going to hit some slick conditions. Southern maryland you can see all the snow on the ground. Its really dicey conditions out there. 30 Miles Per Hour average yellow all over the map in Southern Maryland through brandywine, waldorf. Were not seeing great conditions so please use caution especially on those secs all over the d majors most salted and most plowed. Bridges overpasses on and off ramps freeze first. Inbound traffic a steady flow. Youll hit delays if youre o
