Valley. Four to six in good swath through south jersey and our suburbs in philadelphia including philadelphia and six to ten as you head down the shore with wicked winds blowing snow, poor visibility. Huge problems down the shore. Lets take it down the shore to Chris Oconnell live in ventnor. Chris, youre definitely going to bear the brunt down there. Reporter certainly seems like it, kathy. Preparations in full swing down the shore here as residents are listening to what youre saying as a blizzard warning now in effect for atlantic, burlington and cape may counties. Weve been out here on the bay in ventnor. Take look behind me. I know its very dark out here but theres a stunning site. Something you dont see very often, and that is, a frozen back bay. In the distance you see atlantic city. But boaters take a look at video down here. Some say in parts of the bay ice was more than 6inches thick. This is something that does not happen very often, and that is on top of it a blizzard coming. Forecasted to stay start sometime late tonight. Take a look at the delaware bay. This near the mouth of the Cape May Canal near the cape may lewes ferry. That cape may lewes ferry has been suspended tonight, and through tomorrow because of the ice and the storm conditions tomorrow. Now, concern for Emergency Managers here in cape may county, what could be 50mile an hour Tropical Storm force winds. Because were going to theyre expecting high winds that means a lot of drifting snow and that its going freeze over, and the fact that were going to go from like the mid 20s to night to sometime somewhere around 10 degrees tomorrow night, were going to have a lot of black ice as a result of this event. So its going to be very difficult challenge for the gu guys. Reporter and another concern with those high winds knocking down tree limbs and power lines and knocking out power to people down here at the shore. Certainly something they dont need with up to a foot of snow forecast and bitterly cold temperatures. Its going to be a long few days down here at the shore. Iain . Chris, thank you. Meanwhile in pennsylvania, penndot crews are working harder to make sure the roads are ready for all that snow. Skyfox over penndot trucks heading towards norristown treating route 202 near the king of prussia mall this morning. Penndot says all its trucks are ready to go. The timing of the storm is certainly a concern for us. It is expected to start as early as i said midnight or early hours of tomorrow morning, um, and continue on through the am rush hour which could pose a bit of a challenge for us. Penndot is asking drivers to get all that snow and ice off your car before you hit the road. For your sake as well as others out there on the roads and these frigid temperatures are bursting pipes all over our area. The big ones that carry water to your neighborhood as well as the smaller ones that carry it to your home. Our bruce gordon live in society hill with whats actually happening to those pipes. Bruce . Reporter well, whats happening to those pipes really depend. First of you will on where the pipe is located and how deep underground it is and almost most important of all, especially when philadelphia, what the pipe is made of. Philadelphia Water Department crews were hard at work at second and south streets wednesday afternoon tearing up the street to get out broken 8inch water main. One of the bunch of breaks that happened when temperatures plumped. John diguilio is the departments spokesman. Its been very challenging. Yesterday alone we repair at least 15 water main breaks in the city. And weve had many more throughout the past week. Our crews are out there in frigid temperatures working upwards of 16hour days to make sure we repair as many as we can. Reporter challenge is that well over half the citys 3200 miles of water mains are made of cast iron an older type of material no longer used and for good reason. Cast iron has no give to it really. Cast iron is very very hard and it doesnt really have any flexibility in the metal. Reporter almost a little brittle of sorts. Sure. Reporter water mains are laid 4 feet below ground below the frost line so the breaks down drum water in the pipes freezing and expanding. Instead says diguilio its simi very cold water. 36, 37 degrees flowing through pipes that cant always handle it. Youre just putting additional stress on the pipe. With the water, you know, being so cold and the cast iron pipe reacting to that cold temperature. Reporter what about the frozen pipes that meet you when you get home from work an bit cold day like this one. Thats a very different situation. Heres an interesting video from steve spanglers science we found on youtube. They fill a pipe with water, seal both ends so theres no place for the water to go kind of like when you fail to leave your faucet dripping and your pipes begin to freeze. Now, they super cool the water, more quickly than usual, with liquid nitrogen and bloom mow. A broken pipe, water all over the place and hefty repair bill for the homeowner. The Water Department crew right behind me appears to be wrapping up for the day after long day of work out here at second and south. We should note that the pipes we described for you bursting a minute ago the ones running from the water main to your home, those are called service lines. Usually thee quarter inch copper pipes. Those of course can freeze and break as we showed you but they can also freeze and simply block the water from getting to your home. Any event if its a service line problem, its your responsibility to pay the bill as the home opener. Iain. Good information, bruce. Thanks. Of course keep it right he here. Kathy is back in just a few minutes with another check of your forecast. How you can track the snow in real time by downloading our fox 29 weather app. Its free in the i tunes and google play stores. Pse g crews are on the scene working to cap the leak. We do know theyre waiting for the pressure to go down before they can cap it. Crews dont know whether homeowners in the area will be able to get back in their homes tonight. Kept smelling the gas so i went and got my husband and it was really really strong. We knew it wasnt coming from our house but somebody had been digging across the street on the other side. But it wasnt it wasnt that part that, um. It was down the street the gas pipe had busted.
