In william penn described philadelphia as his Green Country town, he no doubt had tree lined streets in mind. But hundreds of years later, phillys so called street trees are behind some big headaches for homeowners. Our bruce gordon joins me in studio and bruce, love trees, but this is an expensive probl problem. Report it sewer s we see it frankly i was over the city. Trees planned by the city decades ago in spaces far too narrow to handle their trunk and roots. Finally years later, that ticking time bomb goes off. Big beautiful trees that line the 7500 block of walnut lane in mt. Airy will soon be in full bloom. Folks who live here must love them, right . Like the homeowner at 7528 brenda simmons. If i was a lumber jack myself id take it down. Reporter [ laughter ] we first met the simmons monday night as we watched work being done to repair broken sewer lines caused says lewis by ever expanding roots from their city planted street tree. Theyre on the hook for the paper. It started off as 8,800dollar project. Now its going to turn worse because my retainer wall has to come down and they have to go deeper on to our property in order to get to the actual pipes. Reporter simmons say the broken sewer pipes forced them limb the use of their toilet for fear of sewage backups they resorted to taking bird baths instead of showers. Bird bath is when you run water in the sink and you stop it up and you just wash your arms. Splash it around yourself. Uhhuh. Thats a bird bath. Thats a bird bath. Simmons have been asking the Citys Department of parks and recreation to remove the tree for several years. Basically they refused to take it down, because they are saying the tree is alive theres nothing wrong with it. Its a healthy tree theres no need for them to take it down. In other words youre on your own. The city dells us theres no way of knowing for sure it was the tree roots that broke the sewer line. But at a minimum, the street trees on this block have out grown their narrow planting beds uprooting sidewalks. Also, the homeowners responsibility to fix. They look good. From a distance. But brenda is no longer a tree hugger. They can take the tree down. They need to get rid of it. Reporter look, its very clear that in some cases at least the wrong kinds of trees were planted. Way back when. And that the Current Administration has not the money nor the staff to remove all the problem trees. Parks and rec spokeswoman notes in most cases these trees were planned long before the homeowners moved n buyer beware Lewis Simmons says he remembers the tree being planted by the city. Remembers his mother accepting it with no bay of knowing it would cause all these problems years later. Lucy. It got big. Fairly quickly. Yeah. Thank you very much, bruce. Reporter there are already forward facing cameras on septa some 1200 buses. Under the plan, drivers would just push a button and take a picture of the license plate. We believe that there are over a thousand tickets per day of these type of violations. So theyre rampant. Theyre causing potential problems. Reporter not all riders are on board with the idea and say theres very little parking in philadelphia to begin with. Sometimes you park there for a minute and just jump out and nine times out of ten even if the bus lane is open the buses dont pull in. You still have to walk into the street.
