Reporter lesli, it is a sad day at the national zoo and, in fact, the Panda Care Team says they are devastated, but right now they are focused on the surviving cub thats now thriving with mei xiang. The cub that passed away was spending the night with mom in the den overnight, but when the Panda Care Team went to retrieve the little cub this morning, they noticed it was weak are and had breathing weaker and had breathing issues. They tried some techniques, thought it was getting better, but then it died at 2 05 this afternoon. May xiong was having trouble mei xiang was having trouble caring for both of the cubs at the same time. The cubs were born on saturday. The Panda Care Team has been here when bao bao had a twin that was still born. Despite their great efforts, they couldnt save the cub. You have the awesome responsibility of helping a mother panda care for those cubs, i mean its such an honor and at the same time the superhuman efforts that that staff made to keep this cub alive, i mean the entire panda house was filled with the best medical, the best Animal Care Team in the world. Reporter we do know that there is a very low success rate when it comes to panda cub twins being born in the wild and that is why that they used the swapping out method one cub at a time. That is the technique that the chinese use to hopefully have both cubs survive, but in this instance unfortunately that did not happen.
