A short time our our cbs affiliate had a moment of silence on air for two of its own. They were shot to death during a live interview. The shooter is always dead. The reporters were on the air and letting their emotions show. It was a conversation with Vicki Gardner when the peacefulness of our community was shattered. As we approach that moment we want to pause and reflect and we want to share with you once again what made these two so special not just to us but to all who wjdb on police a moment of silence. Jeff pegues is in virginia where the shooting happened. Jeff, good morning. Good morning. The deadly shooting occurred right across the street almost exactly 24 hours ago and since that time investigators have searched the gunmans home and this morning there is more evidence that he may have been planning this attack for months. Alison parker and adam ward did not see the killer walking toward them but he was recording all of it to be hosted later on social media. The gunman comes up from behind, lifts the pistol, waits for wards camera to turn back onto parker and then as many as 14 shots were fired. Vickie gardner was badly wounded. They quickly focused vester flanagan. He worked at the same station and was fired. Then in may of 2014 he sued wdbj for discrimination. Court records say he was dismissed but he apparently held a grudge. He tweeted his on air name about the reporter claiming alison made racist comments and saying that adam went to hr one time. Investigators say he shot himself and he later died in the hospital. Jeff marx, the general manager of wdbj says flanigan was a troubled employee from the start. How early on did you know that he wasnt fitting in here . A few months into his employment. I think we knew he was a live wire, but do you ever see somebody taking up arms and getting throwing their own life away in order to prove some sort of point with a violent overkill. Shortly after the killing someone identifying himself as flanagan faxed a 23page suicide note to a b bc news. He allegedly praised the Mass Shootings at Virginia Tech and columbi columbine. Called wednesdays shooting. And added ive been a human powder keg for a while just waiting to go boom. Flanagan had traffic stops in his background but nothing more serious than that. Law enforcement sources say he was able to purchase two guns legally back in july in roanoke. Margaret. Jeff, thank you. Alison parker and adam ward grew up in the area where they worked together and their colleagues say they both had great future ahead. Vicki gardners husband says this morning she is recovering from her wounds. The local newspaper says the entire area is in a state of shock. Kris van cleave is outside the wdbj station. Good morning. Many have been coming by the station leaving flowers, balloons, cards, wellwishers, mourners coming together. As for the families of the three victims here, they all say theyre struggling to understand why this happened. Immediately people go, wow. You know. She had that it factor. They were two bright young people getting ready to start their lives. Parker just celebrated her 24th birthday and recently moved in with her boyfriend and cohost. They planned to get married. Ward was 27 and worked at the station since he graduated in 2011. He was also engaged to morning producer melissa ott. She was in the newsroom watching the shooting unfolded. It was her last day before moving to North Carolina for a new job. Ward planned to follow her. She posted this on her facebook page. Adam, i will never find a man so happy, selfless, proteshive, funny, charming like you. My soul mate. I will always love you. He had that wit, that charm, that ability to light up a room and so did alison. Reporter andy parker is holding onto his last memory of alison celebrating her birthday with a family on the river. Were going to go down there for a Memorial Service and spread her ashes in the river, which she would have liked. Reporter parker told us he is taking some comfort in the fact that alison did not suffer. He said he will now campaign aggressively for strukter gun laws here in virginia and across the country. As for the third victim, the surviving victim, Vickie Gardner, we understand shes been upgraded to good condition. We spoke with her husband tim. He said she has more treatment, more surgeries today. I spent a long time yesterday on the phone with mary otool, a former fbi director. Shes at the George Mason University school of science and still studying it. She said you could write the book on this guy. He exhibited all the behaviors, the pathway behaviors, which is all the preparation he did to do this. He bought that camera, practiced with itting obtained the guns and so on. The following and stalking, the identification of selected victims, so were seeing more of this. You call him the classic injustice collector. The classic injustice collector are those who arent making it and theyre blaming it on everybody else along the way. In this case you see a classic injustice. What was his injustice. His injustice was he viewed himself that he should be here on Network Television news and unfortunately he found the most terrible way to get there and be that lead story and be on it. John, what do you make i think a part of what we found most disturbing is he not only did it while it was Live Television and deliberately so and that he was photographing it himself as well. Since the Virginia Tech shooting, the fbi profailures when that gunman sent the videotape and it was broadcast on the tv, he said the next step was not to make a manifesto and video, the next step is to record the thing live while youre doing it and to distribute that. Theyve been worried about that for a long time and here it is. But he had this pattern of odd behavior. His coworkers were uncomfortable. He threatened them. As you say, this was thought out. This was deliberate. Why no red flags . Why was he legally able to buy a gun . Unless youre mentally adjudicated incompetent by a court, thats not part of the system, which is a background check you go to to buy a gun. Thats not going to show up on the radar screen. And you see with a lot of these meme that they they planned and executed their attack with such rational planning that theyre able to theyre able to mask the signs of Mental Illness that others see. And that was social media. They have an easy way to distribute whatever way they want to distribute. If you look at this case and stack it up against the Christopher Dorner case, remember the l. A. Police officer who was fired and he targeted all of those and tracked them down one by one and published a giant manifesto on facebook, they track.
