July 14, 2021 Written by OUR READERS The government has disclosed intentions of installing tracking devices in all vehicles, ostensibly to prevent violent crimes. Parliament should conduct benchmarking and avail Ugandans with a list of all democratic countries that successfully prevented violent crimes by this regulation. Surveillance in foreign countries is restricted to convicts such as pedophiles and terrorists. This regulation makes it easier for rogue state operatives to abduct people for ransom since the president once disclosed that police have ‘weevils’. This move is an insult to our constitutional right to privacy under Article 27. It also violates a biblical right to privacy provided as the tenth commandment of Moses (Exodus 20:17). Why did Jesus direct his disciples to shut doors when going to pray (Matthew 6:6)? Privacy is a matter of safeguarding sanctity and divinity of persons, and should not be taken as a mere contest between NRM and opposition parties. Hence, all right-thinking Ugandans and religious leaders have cause to reject it.
