ZFPD's Major Garry Key on ventilator battling COVID

By Munashe Kwangwari
From battling blazes to fighting for his life, a longtime member of the Zoneton Fire Protection District, Major Garry Key, finds himself in the hospital after being diagnosed with COVID-19.Major Key has been with the district for more than 35 years, and on Saturday, members from the district took to Facebook to announce he has been hooked up to a ventilator. The news comes a little over a month after the district suffered the loss of former Fire Chief Rob Orkies, who passed away from a combination of cancer and the virus.“It’s bad enough to see anybody die from COVID,” said Public Information Officer, Rich Carlson. “Then just a month or two later you’ve got the battalion chief, or the number two guy, going through the same thing. It just really tears you up inside.”Letters of support have been pouring in from fire departments all over the country, a gesture Fire Marshall Kevin Moulton says is well received, but he says they’re not surprised.“He gave the Army 29-and-a-half years,” said Moulton. “He did roughly 14 years with the Sheriff’s Office. He served his states and his community well.”As of Sunday, Moulton said Major Key was reportedly doing well and the hope is that he’ll be off the ventilator soon en-route back to his second family. Until then Carlson says, even though they may not be in his hospital room, they’ll be fighting the illness alongside him.“If a firefighter falls down, they’ll be 50 guys there to help him stand up,” said Carlson. “If one of us is cut, we all bleed.”If you wish to do anything to help the district or the Key family, Moulton says they only ask you do one thing.“If we can just get everybody at seven o’clock every night, just do a prayer for Garry and his family, and let’s get them past these tough times,” said Moulton.Carlson said, if Major Key could, he would be telling everyone right now COVID-19 is a bad disease, and that it’s important for people to listen to the advice being given to them by health professionals: To always wear a mask, social distance, and wash your hands.
