Here is a very interesting conservation project aimed at protecting reefs with the repopulation of At Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences (HVHL) in Leeuwarden, the sea urchin Diadema antillarum has been cultivated to help restore the coral reefs around Saba and St. Eustatius (Caribbean Netherlands). The first young urchins bred in Leeuwarden were released on March 24th to the Rotterdam Zoo (Diergaarde Blijdorp). The ultimate goal is to also breed this species on Saba in order to give the sea urchin populations there a helping hand. These sea urchins keep algae growth under control, giving corals more room to grow. During this project, researchers worked closely with students from the Coastal and Marine Management program.

Caribbean Netherlands now has direct connection with INTERPOL KRALENDIJK - Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba now have direct contact with the International Criminal Police Organization INTERPOL headquarters in Lyon, France, and police colleagues almost all over the world via the INTERPOL connections, thanks to an agreement signed on April 12. The signing is a major step in international cooperation for the Dutch Caribbean Police Force KPCN, together with Police Netherlands and INTERPOL. The agreement will enable KPCN police colleagues to consult and feed the INTERPOL databases themselves and to exchange information worldwide in a secure manner. INTERPOL is a worldwide organization to which 194 member states are affiliated. Each member state has a National Central Bureau (NCB). The NCBs maintain communication with the head office and the other NCBs and are the single point of contact for all enforcement services. In the Netherlands, this is NCB The Hague, which is set up at the National International Legal Aid Centre LIRC.

More births in Caribbean Netherlands in year 2020 CARIBBEAN NETHERLANDS--In 2020, 818 new inhabitants were added to the population of the Caribbean Netherlands.   This was mainly due to foreign migration. Both immigration and emigration declined due to travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 crisis. The numbers of both births and deaths were up in previous years.   The direct effect of COVID-19 on mortality was minor: last year, Bonaire registered three confirmed COVID-19 deaths, while no COVID-19 deaths were recorded in St. Eustatius and Saba. This is evident from new population figures on the Caribbean Netherlands released by Statistics Netherlands CBS. Population dynamics in Bonaire.

Published: 23 April 2021 The Dutch Caribbean Police Force (KPCN), together with Police Netherlands and INTERPOL, took a new, major step in our international cooperation on 12 April 2021. The agreement ensures that the islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba, are now in direct contact with the headquarters in Lyon and police colleagues almost all over the world via the INTERPOL connections. This allows our KPCN police colleagues to consult and feed the INTERPOL databases themselves and to exchange information worldwide in a secure manner. INTERPOL is a worldwide organization to which 194 member states are affiliated. Each Member State has a National Central Bureau (NCB). The NCBs maintain communication with the head office and the other NCBs and are the single point of contact for all enforcement services. In the Netherlands, this is NCB The Hague, which is set up at the National International Legal Aid Center (LIRC). A sub-NCB is now being opened for the first time in the Caribbean Netherlands. This sub-NCB falls under the responsibility of NCB The Hague.

EUSTATIUS--Informational material on regulations on the international trade in endangered species of wild flora and fauna – also known as the CITES Convention – has been developed for residents and tourists in Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius. Posters, signs and brochures have been made in four languages – Dutch, English, Papiamentu and Spanish – by the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) by order of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (ANFQ).   These materials can be found at the airports and seaports and at government and customs offices, nature park management organisations, diving schools and hotels throughout the Caribbean Netherlands. In this way, the DCNA and ANFQ want to raise awareness about the protected status of flora and fauna in the Caribbean Netherlands, such as orchids and corals, and the prohibition on picking or taking such species.

Published: 12 March 2021 SABA:--- The Public Entity Saba receives a one-time amount of US $1 million from the Dutch Government. State Secretary of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations Raymond Knops wants to add the monies in 2021 to the free allowance, allowing Saba to take its own decision on how to spend these funds, he informed the local government in a letter on Friday, March 12. State Secretary Knops: “I have been consulting with the Saba Executive Council for a while about the height of the free allowance and the shortage of structural means. Saba has in the past years shown that it has its financial management and the rightful spending of means. With this contribution, I want to accommodate Saba.”
