Lukasik faced one count of importation and one count of money laundering. At the High Court in Auckland on Tuesday, Justice Tracey Walker said she had taken into account the time the men previously served in overseas detention, prior to their extradition to New Zealand to stand trial. DAVID WHITE/STUFF Patryk Lukasz Lukasik was sentenced to nine years and one month on importing drug charges and money laundering. Both Wilk’s and Lukasik’s lawyers argued for their clients' sentences to be shortened, saying the amount of cocaine was moderate in comparison to other drug imports. Lukasik’s lawyer Lorraine Smith told the court her client had no real influence in the operation and was working for his father overseas, who was facing debts and possible prison time.

A charity that provides a pathway to abortion services in Northern Ireland has warned it will end in October unless it receives funding. Abortion was decriminalised in the region in 2019 following legislation passed by Westminster at a time when devolution in the region had collapsed. However, while individual health trusts have been offering services on an ad hoc basis, the Department of Health has yet to centrally commission the services due to an ongoing impasse within the Executive. The charity Informing Choices NI (ICNI) has been providing a central access point into early medical abortion (EMA) since April 15, 2020. A report has found that in the first year almost 2,200 women and girls referred themselves into the central access point service.

The Royal Navy flagship HMS Queen Elizabeth is taking on the “lion’s share” of operations against the so-called Islamic State group in Iraq. It has also piqued the interest of Russian warplanes, who try to keep tabs on its cutting-edge F-35 jet in a “cat-and-mouse” game with British and US pilots. Speaking aboard the 65,000-tonne carrier on its first-ever deployment, Commodore Steve Moorhouse said the UK is carrying out most of the missions to wipe out the remnants of IS in Iraq as the US focuses on its withdrawal from Afghanistan. BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The push to build solar plants in Louisiana has been drawing increasing scrutiny from state lawmakers and local officials, who say farmers fear being crowded out of land leases by solar companies with deeper pockets. The Advocate reports at least three parishes — West Baton Rouge, Tangipahoa and Washington — have issued moratoriums on utility-scale solar projects. Some legislative leaders also took aim at solar developments in the recently ended legislative session, trying to halt property tax breaks for such projects. Sen. Bret Allain, R-Franklin, speaks at a news conference Thursday, June 10, 2021, after the end of the 2021 regular session. Behind him are Senate President Page Cortez (left) and Rep. The University of Cambridge will provide more than £100 million in bursaries over the next 10 years to support students experiencing financial pressures. The bursary scheme will help undergraduates at Cambridge with living costs from October this year so they do not have to rely on their parents as much. More students will qualify for support as the threshold for eligibility will rise from the current maximum household income of £42,620 to £62,215. The university expects between 25% and 30% of students to be eligible for the support – currently it is around one in five. It comes as the most selective universities are under increased pressure to improve access to higher education for different groups of students including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
