Thunder Bay – “We would like to thank the community for their support over the last 25 years, and we hope to return with this annual event in 2021,” said Ken Koza, Amalgamated Transit Union 966 President. “We wish everyone a safe and healthy holiday season and a happy new year.”
The Annual ATU Local 966 and City of Thunder Bay Santa Bus food drive has been cancelled this year due to COVID restrictions.
He added that residents should instead consider donating directly to the Thunder Bay Food Bank if they are able. ....

Grand Valley Transit workers want higher pay and better protections


Unhappy with their treatment through the COVID-19 pandemic, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1776 members voted no confidence Sunday in Grand Valley Transit General Manager Valdo Lewis.
Local 1776 President Judi DeRusha reports that 94% of local chapter members voted no confidence in Lewis to perform his duties. This comes after a comment he made as the union negotiates for higher pay and safer working conditions for its drivers.
Negotiations will continue this week with TrasnDev, GVT’s contractor.
“Our members have been heroes on the frontlines, providing essential transportation to keep our community moving,” DeRusha said in a press release.
She represents the GVT drivers employed by TransDev. ....

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) The La Crosse Common Council endorsed Mayor Tim Kabat’s 90-day extension of the city’s emergency COVID-19 declaration Thursday night.
Kabat’s declaration mentioned additional costs the city can expect to incur to maintain safety of the public and staffers during the pandemic.
The original declaration in April, which was open-ended, eventually led to financial cutbacks in several departments, such as shortened hours and services at the main La Crosse Public Library and closings of its two branches. ....

Council approves 2021 City of Ottawa budget, Ottawa police budget and extends Lansdowne partnership

The Ottawa Police Services Board passed its 2021 budget in late November after two lengthy meetings in which nearly 100 members of the community demanded the board scrap a planned $13.2 million year-over-year increase in spending.
Board chair Coun. Diane Deans told CTV Morning Live after the budget had passed that they could not make a $13 million cut so soon.
You can t, just a few days before you pass a police budget, decide to reduce the numbers by 13 million dollars. That would have meant layoffs at police because most of the increase that they re getting this year goes to cost of living increases and their salaries, she said. Those are negotiated through collective bargaining so, if we didn’t have that money, it was going to be a cut to police. ....
