ECA Convenes a Virtual Validation Meeting on SOEs | United Nations Economic Commission for Africa

Virtually, 28 January 2021 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Sub-Regional Office for Southern Africa held today a virtual validation meeting on a study report on State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) in South Africa titled “Governance of State-Owned Enterprises in South Africa: Enhancing Performance, Efficiency and Service Delivery.” The validation meeting focused on the context of SOEs in South Africa using case studies of the main SOEs in the country, the challenges and opportunities as well as brief presentations of SOEs challenges and solutions in Lesotho and Mauritius.
SOEs play a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of every country’s economy, noted the Acting Director of ECA’s Sub-Regional Office for Southern Africa, Mr. Sizo Mhlanga during his welcome remarks at the validation meeting while underlining the importance of corporate governance of SOEs to ensure financial stability and sustainable global growth. “We are here to address a prese ....

Zambia : Youths urged to embrace peace as Zambia remembers Holocaust victims

Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs Godfridah Sumaili has called on youths in the country to embrace peace and focus on how they can make a difference now and in the future.
Reverend Sumaili explained youths should cherish peace and unity as they are future leaders and current partners in the country’s development.
Ms Sumaili pointed out that there is no place for hate, racism and prejudice as the country strives to achieve the agenda 2030 for sustainable development.
She made the remarks yesterday when she graced the virtual Holocaust Commemoration in Lusaka.
“Holocaust means a lot to Zambia as we have over the years been known as the beacon of peace in the region. You should be interested to know that some Jews who survived the holocaust came to Zambia and settled in places such as Livingstone and I encourage everyone to visit Livingstone and see the Holocaust museum,” she said. ....

The present Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) seeks to mobilize assistance for close to 945,000 people in 2021, in support of the efforts of the Government of Myanmar to aid those affected by humanitarian crises and challenges in different parts of the country. As has been the case for previous years, the HRP places protection at the centre of an inclusive response tailored to the particular needs of the most vulnerable women and men, girls and boys.
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further demonstrated the critical importance of localization in Myanmar. In 2021, the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) will build on the partnerships with national NGOs and local civil society actors that were strengthened as we adjusted to new operational realities in 2020.
