Salem man gets one year for sex offenses | News, Sports, Jobs

YOUNGSTOWN One of the men arrested last fall in a coordinated effort to arrest those attempting to have sex with minors was sentenced Friday to one year in prison.
Jason Walker, 39, East Ninth Street, Salem, appeared at a hearing before Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Anthony Donofrio. Court records show Walker had pleaded guilty Feb. 24 to charges of attempted unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, importuning / soliciting an adolescent and resisting arrest. A charge of possessing criminal tools was dismissed.
Walker is one of 14 men arrested in Mahoning County last October as the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force and Sheriff Jerry Greene’s office participated in Operation Autumn Hope. ....

Sebring man facing child porn charges | News, Sports, Jobs

SEBRING – An 18-year-old Sebring resident is facing several obscenity charges after police say they found child pornography in his home.
Cameron Scmid, East Oregon Avenue, has been charged with 20 counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor or impaired person, a fourth-degree felony after Sebring police seized items from his home in September and turned them over to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for analysis, according to news partner WKBN-TV.
Sebring police were alerted by the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
Schmid was taken to the Mahoning County Jail. His bond was set at $80,000. He is scheduled to be arraigned today in Sebring court. ....

Attorney for Strongsville priest seeks trial continuance, cites challenges created by coronavirus pandemic


The defense attorney for a Strongsville priest with Geauga County ties facing federal charges is seeking a continuance for the trial and all related deadlines.
The priest, Robert McWilliams, 40, is facing charges of two counts of sex trafficking of a minor, three counts of sexual exploitation of children, one count of transportation of child pornography, one count of receipt and distribution of visual depictions of real minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct and one count of possession of child pornography.
McWilliams is a former seminarian at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Newbury Township.

In August, U.S. Court for the Northern District of Ohio Judge Sara Lioi set a trial date of Feb. 18, 2021, and a change of plea deadline for Dec. 11. Those dates were set after defense attorney Robert A. Dixon asked for and was granted a continuance. At that time, Dixon cited added challenges of preparing a case due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. ....
