Lawmakers call for DOL to release fraud data

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) For months, News10NBC has been telling you about the rampant problem of unemployment identity theft.
Thousands of you have learned that your name, address and Social Security number, likely breached years ago, has been used by scammers to collect unemployment benefits.
News10NBC Investigative Reporter Jennifer Lewke has repeatedly asked the New York State Department of Labor for a full accounting of how much it has paid out to fraudsters but the information has not been provided. Now, New York State lawmakers are demanding the information too.
Unemployment identity theft is a problem everywhere but other states have been more transparent about it. California for example, admits it has likely paid as much as $31 billion in fraudulent claims. ....

It may be spring, but for Western New York there’s always a chance of snow in the forecast. And, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, Chautauqua County could see a little of everything today.
A winter weather advisory remains in effect from midnight through 2 p.m. Certain areas could see between 4 and 6 inches of snow. Meanwhile, the weather service said a “brief period of sleet and freezing rain is possible near the Pennsylvania state line.”
The advisory includes Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and southern Erie counties.
“Plan on slushy and very slippery road conditions,” the advisory states. “The hazardous conditions will impact the Wednesday morning commute. This will be a heavy, wet snow, and may result in isolated power outages and a few downed tree limbs.” ....

Jamestown Community College has received $541,765 from New York state to start a short-term advanced manufacturing training program.
JCC will launch a new short-term advanced manufacturing training program to prepare individuals for jobs in advanced manufacturing through CNC/Machining and machining technician programs. The eight- to 10-week programs will include training and trainee supports, preparing individuals for immediate entry into the workforce. The program will help workers in Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties.
“These program awardees will provide professionals with the training and skills they need to compete in today’s fast-growing industries and help New York build back better,” said Gov. Andnrew Cuomo. “The state’s workforce must adapt in order to take full advantage of the opportunities in the rapidly changing economy, and our Workforce Development Challenge is giving Western New Yorkers the edge they need to succeed.� ....

With Western New York possibly facing a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Seneca Nation is reaching out to neighboring school districts near its Cattaraugus and Allegany territories to help make vaccines accessible for eligible students and staff.
The Nation recently notified district leaders at Gowanda, Silver Creek, Lake Shore and Salamanca that eligible students and staff can make vaccine appointments with the Seneca Nation Health System on target dates over the next two weeks.
“The recent rise in cases in the region, particularly among people 19 and younger, makes the urgency for everyone to get a COVID vaccine even greater,” said Seneca Nation President Matthew Pagels. “Keeping our children and are schools safe has to be a priority, and we know that vaccine access in rural communities has been a challenge.
