Burlington, IA- As Burlington schools begin the 2021 school year, they will be doing so without a mask mandate. Due to a new law passed by the Iowa Legislature, schools cannot require students to wear masks, but that doesn't mean masks will be banned in Burlington schools. Burlington Superintendent Pat Cohen says that if a student, staff member, or parent wants to wear a mask to classes or school events, they have every right to do so. "Governor Reynolds has made it very clear that we cannot mandate masks, and we will follow her orders and not mandate masks," Cohen said. "But, if a student or staff member or someone attending a sporting event or open house chooses to wear a mask that's fine as well." Cohen also said that anyone showing any kind of illness, especially respiratory symptoms will be asked to stay home from school.
