Bill to address rampant unemployment insurance fraud passes first committee

With broad support from law enforcement and prosecutors, legislation preventing fraudulent unemployment claims has passed out of the Assembly’s Consumer Privacy and Protection Committee. AB 110, authored by Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris, will require the Employment Development Department (EDD) to cross-check incarceration records in order to prevent paying fraudulent benefits. “In the midst of this terrible crisis, fraudsters and criminals spotted an opportunity to bilk California taxpayers for billions of dollars,” said Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris (D-Laguna Beach). “AB110 is a simple, common sense step to stop unemployment insurance fraud involving California inmates.” Over the past year, district attorneys across California have uncovered multiple fraud rings involving state prisoners who coordinated with non-incarcerated accomplices to file unemployment benefits under the federally funded Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program. After YouTuber Stevie Ryan s death, a nurse faces scrutiny

Stevie Ryan seemed ready to break out of a rut. Her pioneering work as an early YouTuber had led to a VH1 show, but “Stevie TV” was canceled after two seasons and Ryan subsequently struggled to chart a course in Hollywood. For a period, she had stopped going to auditions altogether. In spring 2017, however, she recommitted to her career, telling her manager that she was ready to get back to work. Around the same time, Ryan was also allegedly starting a new relationship one with Gerald Baltz, a nurse practitioner who for two years had provided her with psychiatric care, issuing her prescriptions for several drugs used to treat mental health disorders.

“As a sole faculty member speaking out, it’s uncomfortable and I’m worried about my job,” Kil said. “If San Jose State University thinks that what happened in our department is done with, and justice was served I openly disagree with them.” Villareal said the university should be embarrassed by the investigation because it looked like administrators were “trying to sweep things under the rug.” The probe started after Dean of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts, Charles Bullock contacted Correia regarding use of an unauthorized off-campus checking account.  Following an email and phone conversations, the Justice Studies department head admitted he made some personal purchases using the account. In a letter obtained by the NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit, Correia wrote, “I am embarrassed to say there were some inadvertent personal charges, which I have reimbursed.”
