Cities Murders and non-fatal shootings have been soaring in cities across the United States. One reason is a phenomenon that police refer to as “ping pong murders” a cycle of retaliatory violence that can spiral out of control. Before that happens, public officials must take quick and decisive action to cut the cycle off. Ping pong murders are a deadly serious phenomenon. Imagine that two gangs in a city occupy territory in adjoining neighborhoods. A member of Gang A kills a member of Gang B over drugs, money, a territorial dispute, an old grudge, or a passing insult. If the murderer is quickly arrested, incarcerated, and prosecuted, the score on the streets will be roughly even. But if the murderer runs free, Gang B will take matters into its own hands by killing a member of Gang A. Hence the ping pong metaphor: they take a shot, we take a shot, they take a shot, we take a shot. ....

DNA identification indexes consist of DNA profiles acquired from evidence samples of convicted offenders who committed either a penal law felony or a felony offense. ....
SHARE: Last summer, calls from progressives to “defund the police” in New York City following the murder of George Floyd caused the New York City Council to vote on shifting $1 billion from the NYPD’s budget and played a role in the fizzling of New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson’s bid for mayor and last year’s loss by former Staten Island Rep. Max Rose. But one year later, on the heels of a high-profile shooting in Times Square and as the city grapples with an uptick in violent crime, shootings and anti-Asian hate crimes, calls to defund the police have largely gone quiet. And some believe that this surge in certain crimes could tip the scales of the June 22 Democratic primary for mayor and clear the way for a more moderate candidate to prevail as more New Yorkers go back to their offices and the subways. ....
