SCV News | COC Theatre Department Presents 'Virtuality' at Musical Festival


Abigail Thomas, a first-year COC student, was one 16 finalists selected for the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival’s Musical Theatre Initiative Cabaret and Competition.
The College ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌Canyons‌ ‌Theatre‌ ‌Department’s‌ ‌devised‌ ‌production‌ ‌“Virtuality: the 2020 Tournaments” was presented at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) for Region 8 held Feb. 10 – 13.
The pre-recorded production, which ‌examines‌ ‌the pandemic along the backdrop of‌ ‌protests,‌‌ ‌politics‌ ‌and‌ ‌the‌‌ ‌ever-thinning‌ line‌ ‌between‌ ‌news‌ ‌and‌ ‌entertainment, was one of three invited college productions.
“It was a huge honor,” said COC theatre instructor Susan Hinshaw. “The students have worked so incredibly hard and did whatever was necessary to bring their very ambitious vision to life. I am so proud of them.” ....

COC Theatre Production Presented At Kennedy Center College Theater Festival
The College ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌Canyons‌ (COC) ‌Theatre‌ ‌Department’s‌ ‌devised production‌ “Virtuality: the 2020 Tournaments” was presented at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) for Region 8 last week.
In devised theatre, the performance ensemble creates the script, costumes, sound, lights, scenery, projections, and anything else needed to bring the show to life. The pre-recorded production of “Virtuality”, which ‌examined ‌the pandemic, protests,‌‌ ‌politics‌ ‌and‌ ‌the‌‌ ‌relationship ‌between‌ ‌news‌ ‌and‌ ‌entertainment, was one of three college productions invited to the festival from Feb.10-13.

SFCC theater production finds unlikely success despite COVID challenges

here are countless moving parts that go into producing a musical, so much so that in normal circumstances it seems like a herculean task. Adding in a pandemic, strict health regulations and unreliable internet makes that task a hundred times harder.

It was a new experience, constantly surviving every turn, which was exciting, says Ashley Demoville, director of the SFCC drama department. Being in the field of theater for a few decades, it was the first time where everything was completely different. I ve made movies and plays, but this was completely new. Connecticut Repertory Theatre (CRT) continues its 2020-21 virtual season with Talk to Me Like
the Rain and Let Me Listen by Tennessee Williams, directed by Dexter Singleton. All performances will be presented online, beginning on Thursday evening February 18 at 7:30pm, and continuing through Sunday, February 21 at 2:00pm.
CRT presents this one act play as part one in a three-part series by Tennessee Williams. The remaining one acts are: This Property is Condemned which opens March 18th and, And Tell Sad Stories of the Death of Queens which opens April 22. These one act plays are performed by an all student cast with talk back session for all three titles in this series. ....
