Awards in the Americana and country music categories were handed out during the 63rd Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony on Sunday afternoon with John Prine winning a pair of posthumous Grammys for his song “I Remember Everything.” Written with Pat McLaughlin, “I Remember Everything” was named Best American Roots Songs and Best American Roots Performance. It is the final song that Prine recorded before his death in April from complications related to Covid-19.
“The music community in Nashville and beyond, your love and encouragement has meant the world to us this past year,” Fiona Whelan Prine, the songwriter’s widow, said in a Zoom acceptance speech, flanked by her sons. “Merry Christmas,” offered Tommy Prine, a nod to his father’s yearlong love of the holiday.
JC Tubbs, 79 of Hollywood, MD passed away at MedStar St. Mary s Hospital in Leonardtown, MD on Monday, February 15, 2021.
He was born on May 12, 1941 in Iowa City, IA to the late Robert Jackson Tubbs and Esther L. Cook.
JC is a graduate of Corydon High School in Iowa. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country for four years, until his honorable discharge in September 1964. During his service, he earned the Good Conduct Medal.
The Navy may have brought JC to St. Mary s County from Iowa, but a little redhead named Shirley Louden kept him here. While stationed at Patuxent River, he met Shirley through her sister s boyfriend and was smitten. He ended up spending the rest of his life here with her. They started and raised their family here and he continued his career as a civil servant until he retired in 1996. He worked for many years after his official retirement, first for McKay s Food Stores and then Walmart for 16 years.
I ve got a thrilling bunch of new artists on this week s
All Songs Considered, and at the top of my list are two Los Angeles musicians; the first is mehro, a young singer whose high, soaring voice is reminiscent of Jeff Buckley. Then there s Buzzy Lee, another artist with a wide-ranging voice and a record she made with producer/composer Nicolas Jaar.
NPR Music s Lyndsey McKenna joins me to share the music of Johanna Samuels, a singer who s got a video that features Erin Rae and Courtney Marie Andrews. And speaking of videos, the funny-sad tale of TÅth s attempt to honor his aunt by playing trumpet at her funeral comes to a crashing, poignant end with the song Turnaround (Cocaine Song). We also have music from the Chicago-based â and friends from college â Moontype.
Best albums of 2020 made by Arizona artists, ranked Ed Masley, Arizona Republic
Arizona artists had a harder time connecting with their local fans in 2020. Music venues shut down in early March in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and remained shuttered, for the most part, through December.
Some artists did their best to stay connected via livestream, which was nice.
But just because you couldn t see your favorite Arizona artists in your favorite Arizona bars the way you did in pre-pandemic times, that doesn t mean you couldn t stay connected to their music through recordings.
And 2020 was a great year to experience new music made by Arizona artists. These were the best we had a chance to hear, from Maynard James Keenan s latest dispatch from Jerome to internationally recognized releases from Spirit Adrift and Phoenix native Courtney Marie Andrews.
