A church, a theatre, a racecourse and a school hall have all been put forward as potential new venues to accommodate large numbers of councillors for socially distanced meetings when councils are set to return to face-to-face meetings next month.
Councils are being pushed into considering drastic measures in order to ensure they can hold meetings that adhere to social distancing guidelines while also enabling all their councillors to attend. In some cases, specialist sound equipment is being sought to make sure members can be heard in large scale venues that were not designed for such occasions. ....

THE Government is facing mounting pressure from councils across the region to reconsider its plans to relaunch local democracy with face-to-face public meetings next month.
Ahead of Lawyers in Local Government launching a High Court challenge on April 21 to the Government’s decision to not extend legal powers enabling councils to hold remote, virtual meetings, leading councillors in North Yorkshire and the North-East have claimed being forced to meet in person to take decisions would undermine lockdown efforts and put people at risk. ....

EXCLUSIVE: County reverses decision to leave LGA
A county council that was on the brink of leaving the Local Government Association has reversed its decision.
Lincolnshire CC leader Martin Hill (Con) told LGC the council would remain a member of the body after receiving reassurances from its chair James Jamieson (Con) that had persuaded him to stay
However, Leicestershire CC is sticking to its decision to quit the LGA, and may devote the £100,000 savings to filling highway potholes.
Leader Nick Rushton (Con) told LGC that Leicestershire had given a year’s notice to the LGA several times and been persuaded to stay but his patience was now exhausted and it would leave in April 2022. ....
