Cook County treasurer s analysis of municipal debt by individual property is required reading

Pappas analysis shows for the first time the breakdown of municipal debt in Cook County by individual property. In essence, as Crain s reporter A.D. Quig explains, it s a look at what debt weighs on individual buildings compared with the overall value of the property. The takeaways are eye-popping. Take Willis Tower. The city s tallest and perhaps most famous building carries an attributed share of debt at around $289 million, or roughly 41.5 percent of the building s market value of $697 million, Quig reports. Think that s scary? If your house is worth $66,970 in south suburban Riverdale, you re technically on the hook for $31,800 in local government debt, Quig points out. That s roughly equal to 48 percent of the home s value.

Another successful phone bank as Pappas and Chatman of ABC 7 Chicago return $2 7 million more to property owners

Share this article Share this article CHICAGO, May 12, 2021 /PRNewswire/ We did it again! Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said today that her office will be returning $2.7 million to homeowners who called the Black and Latino Houses Matter live phone bank she hosted with ABC 7 Chicago today, Wednesday, May 12. In March, Treasurer Pappas and ABC7 Chicago returned $12.5 million to homeowners, raising the total amount to nearly $15.2 million. Staff from the Treasurer s Office, fluent in Spanish, Polish, Chinese and English helped homeowners find refunds, apply for property tax exemptions and avoid the annual Tax Sale of delinquent taxes. All houses matter, but I launched the Black and Latino Houses Matter initiative because the Tax Sale disproportionately impacts people of color in the county Pappas said. Over 75 percentage of all properties are located in Black and Latino communities.

Evolution of stores | Retail Dive

Note from the editor It may seem obvious to say that stores have had to evolve in the past two decades as e-commerce infiltrated the industry. Then again, stores have always evolved in order to compete as times, technology and tastes change. And, most of all, to please customers. In the internet era, a shopper is likely to have made a series of decisions based on information gathered on their phone, well before they get to the store. Which by the way is what most shoppers still do, for practical reasons, and, at least some of the time, because it’s fun.
