Headlines of doom and gloom have long plagued Danville. For the two thirds of Virginians residing in the state’s “Urban Crescent” stretching from Northern Virginia through Richmond to Hampton Roads, Southern and Southwest Virginia can seem like irredeemable boondocks.
The relatively recent heralding of Danville as the “Comeback City” shows there’s more nuance to the region. Either despite or because of its past hardships, Danville has pioneered a model of resilient transit service other cities across the nation could reproduce. ....

Patrick Henry Community College will hold forums, starting today, for the four finalists who are in the running to become the school’s next president. Over the next two weeks, they will tour the campus and answer questions from the community. Due to the pandemic, the forums will be held via Zoom.

Danville Police Chief to Brief Town Council on Officer Training After Killings


John Burris, a Bay Area-based civil rights attorney representing families of both men Hall killed in civil suits, said witnesses have disputed the official account, saying Wilson was backing up. Burris has said it was a kill shot to Wilson s face. Wilson, the African American son of a retired of a retired Southern California police officer, died in the hospital the following week. 
The second shooting is still being investigated. Families of both deceased men said they suffered from mental health issues. 
The report to be presented Tuesday details how Danville officers usually come to the city after serving as Contra Costa County sheriff s deputies, as Hall did. A staff report attached to the meeting agenda says officers are professional and well trained and undergo specific training in de-escalation techniques, bias awareness, and cultural diversity.      ....

Graduations set for Danville City high schools


DANVILLE, Va. — During Thursday’s meeting of the Danville School Board, Chief Operations Officer Dr. Wayne Lyle gave an update on the city’s high school graduations, which are planned to be outdoor, in-person events at the end of May. 
Governor Ralph Northam’s announced a plan for safe in-person graduation events, which states that indoor graduations are limited to a maximum of 500 people, or 30 percent of the venue capacity, whichever is less. The division’s high schools usually have their events held indoors.
Outdoor locations will allow each high school to host 5,000 people or 30 percent of the venue capacity listed on the certificate of occupancy, whichever is less.  ....
