Shootings in Wairoa have prompted an urgent telephone conference between police, community and agency leaders in Wairoa in a bid to find answers to decades-long, often-armed gang-based conflict in the area.
But, revealing the meeting took place late yesterday, Gisborne-based police Tairawhiti (Gisborne, East Coast and Wairoa) area manager Inspector Sam Aberahama said there are incidents and details police are not being told about.
He said it s all about red and blue – sometimes within a family and sometimes intra gangs rather than between gangs. ....

A man who killed a stranger after headbutting him during a dispute over a supermarket car park has become eligible for parole - just six months after being sentenced for the death.
Emilio Richard Mac Tanirau Whaanga appeared before the Parole Board late last year, just months after being given a sentence of three years and three months in prison.
In December 2019, the 24-year-old, who at the time was serving a one-year sentence of intensive supervision for stomping on another person s neck, became angry with a fellow shopper after believing he had parked in an incorrect car park in Lower Hutt. ....

Auckland cyclists are experiencing a bumpy ride on a new $14.4 million cycleway along Tamaki Drive.
After being deluged with complaints, Bike Auckland chairwoman Barb Cuthbert rode the new cycleway on her e-bike at a
decent speed today and felt it had an uneven surface.
I don t think it s a crisis, but it should be repairable, and it needs to be repaired because it s a new build and deserves a better finish, she said, adding the new surface was being used by cyclists and people on e-scooters in droves. ....

Kasambahays who contract Covid eligible for ECC benefits

AN OFFICIAL of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Friday, January 22, 2021, said kasambahays or household service workers (HSWs) who contract the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) are eligible for cash assistance from the Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC).
In a televised public briefing, DOLE Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns (BWSC) Director Karen Trayvilla said infected kasambahays may apply for the P10,000 cash assistance.
They may also apply for the daily income benefit amounting to P480 per day for up to 14 days.
Trayvilla also said kasambahays may have their treatment expenses reimbursed.
The ECC cash assistance program aims to provide employees who fall ill with Covid-19 with P10,000 cash while those who succumbed to the disease are entitled to P15,000. ....
