NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has disapproved of the practice of the Uttar Pradesh government releasing life convicts who are eligible for remission of sentence only on the Republic Day. The court said the exercise must be done throughout the year and set a deadline of four weeks for the state to decide the plea of prisoners seeking premature release.
While deciding a batch of petitions filed by over 30 life convicts lodged in different jails in Uttar Pradesh, a bench of Justices Navin Sinha and V Ramasubramanian also held that the state government should itself find out prisoners who are fulfilling the criteria for premature release as per its 2018 policy and release them. The state framed the policy on the directions of the Allahabad HC.

New Delhi, May 4 : In a bid to reduce over-crowding in jails amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to decide, within a month, on premature release of prisoners who fulfil the conditions set out by the state for remission of sentence.
A bench of Justices Navin Sinha and V. Ramasubramanian disposed a clutch of petitions filed by more than three dozen prisoners, who sought release, after spending around 20 years in jail. The bench directed the state government to take a decision on the plea of these prisoners along with other similarly-placed prisoners within a month.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked Centre to constitute special courts on lines of fast track court for expeditious disposal of cases pending against parliamentarians, MLAs.
NEW DELHI: Faced with a “deluge” of petitions filed by prisoners who have spent around 20 years in jail while undergoing life sentence in various prisons but whose pleas for remission have not been decided by the Uttar Pradesh government, the Supreme Court has expressed concern over the state not taking any decision and said it should be done within four weeks after such a plea is filed.
Agreeing to hear a plea filed by 28 prisoners of Central Jail, Agra seeking direction to the state government to release them, a bench of Justices Navin Sinha and Krishna Murari asked the petitioners’ advocate Rishi Malhotra to serve the petition copy to the standing counsel of Uttar Pradesh government.
