A new disclosure and reporting requirement will empower the Commerce Commission to monitor and regulate retail payments.
The government is introducing regulations to reduce the fees banks charge businesses when customers use credit or debit cards.
The Commerce Commission will also be given powers to regulate and monitor the retail payments system. There will also be a disclosure and reporting requirement to enable this.
In a statement, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister David Clark said a Retail Payments Systems Bill would be introduced later this year.

Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister David Clark has announced the Bill will be introduced later this year, with the hope of saving an estimated $74 million each year for New Zealand merchants. A 0.8 per cent cap will be introduced on the interchange fee merchants must pay for credit card transactions, whilst a cap of 0.6 per cent will be brought in for online debit card payments. ....

“Pre COVID, EFTPOS has been the main way Kiwis
pay for goods and services, and this is fees-free for
retailers. Increasingly, however, consumers are favouring
