Of all the wonderful eras of television, the 1980s might have been the golden age of the situation comedy, or at least a certain kind of sitcom. The TV landscape was still by and large dominated by three broadcast networks, who presented programming that appealed to as broad an audience as possible. Most comedies of the era could be safely consumed by adults and little kids alike, because they were generally clean, understandable, and offered jokes that were easily digested. They also all kind of looked the same, shot on a set with multiple cameras and a laugh track-sweetened studio audience telling viewers at home when to laugh.

“If someone from the UK sees me, they are on me like a pack of wolves,” joked Dick Van Dyke, who always accepted the mockery over his role in Mary Poppins with good grace, admitting he’d delivered “the most atrocious Cockney accent in the history of cinema”. Even so, the man who played Bert the chimney sweep remains indubitably popular.
There are times when even I think I am guilty of piling on black people, especially when I remind myself that some of my nicest neighbors are members of a black family.
But thereâs the rub. There are many decent, hard-working, tax-paying black people. But put them in a group and they suddenly reflect the lowest common denominator. It certainly doesnât help their overall image that 95% of them will vote for any dope on the ballot so long as they spot a (D) after his or her name.
From my point of view, I feel called upon to balance the coverage because in spite of their record number of murders, assaults and abortions, blacks have somehow become Americaâs sacred cows. Let a white politician even question the work habits of black students, and his career is finished. Once tarred as a racist, even his family will disown him.
Veteran US performer Cloris Leachman, best known for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Facts of Life and Mel Brooks comedies, has died, aged 94.
She died in California of natural causes on Tuesday.
Her longtime manager Juliet Green said, “It’s been my privilege to work with Cloris Leachman, one of the most fearless actresses of our time. There was no one like Cloris. With a single look she had the ability to break your heart or make you laugh ’till the tears ran down your face. You never knew what Cloris was going to say or do and that unpredictable quality was part of her unparalleled magic.”
