“It was a spotty, violent storm that ripped the leaves right off, ” Ryan Kichler, a Simcoe-area farmer said Tuesday. “It came on quickly.
“One minute it was sunny, then you could see it coming in and then it hit us really hard and then left.”
Kichler said about 25 acres of tobacco was lost on a field he rents out to friends on the 8th Concession of Simcoe. His home farm is in the Evergreen Hill Road and Hillcrest Road area on the outskirts of Simcoe and came through the storm relatively unscathed.
There were actually two storms on Sunday with the first that included heavy rain and winds hitting at about 11 a.m. followed by the hail at about 4 p.m. The hail lasted for about 25 minutes at his location, Kichler said.
