GEG To Power Port Of Nigg Facilities With Green

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc. Credit: GEG In an eventful week in which its Port of Nigg was selected as a turbine foundation marshaling port for the giant Seagreen offshore wind farm, UK-based Global Energy Group said Thursday it had struck a deal to power its Port of Nigg facilities using green hydrogen, to significantly reduce emissions at the site. The company has teamed up with ScottishPower to identify processes and plant at the facility on Cromarty Firth that could be powered by green hydrogen. Green hydrogen will be generated at the Nigg site and used to power heavy plant, machinery, and vehicles used in the daily operations at the site and to power high temperature, energy-intensive processes like the manufacturing of offshore wind components.

ScottishPower targets green hydrogen success story with new business unit

Reporter, Current± A new business division focused on green hydrogen has been created by ScottishPower, with its first projects expected next year. ScottishPower’s first projects will be focused on decarbonising large industry, food and drink and heavy transport. It is looking to work with a range of organisations such as distilleries, the steel industry, petrochemicals and ammonia users, with this expected to support the government’s ambition of achieving 5GW of low carbon hydrogen production in 2030 as outlined in the energy white paper. However, this will require “a mechanism from government to allow the investment needed to boost competition in green hydrogen going forward,” ScottishPower’s hydrogen director Barry Carruthers said.
