Bastrop County courthouse in an attempt to establish his innocence of the murder of Stacy Stites, as activists, religious leaders, and members of Reed’s family rallied in support of his case.
The hearing, which is expected to take two weeks, began on July 19, 2021, with Reed’s case for innocence. His lawyers presented evidence that Reed, who is Black, was having an affair with Stites, who is white; that Stites was actually murdered by her abusive fiancé, Jimmy Fennell; and that Fennell, who at that time was a police officer in Giddings, Texas, had framed Reed for the murder. Numerous witnesses testified that testified that they had seen Stites together with Reed on prior occasions, heard Fennell threaten to kill her if she cheated on him, and heard Fennell admit to the killing. The State starts to make its case by bringing in several law enforcement who either worked with Jimmy Fennell or were involved in the investigation.
BASTROP, Texas - Friday was the first day for the state to begin to make their case.
Their first witness was Renae Duncan, whose husband worked at the Bastrop County Sheriff s Office back in 1996, the year Stacey Stites was murdered. The rest of the day consisted of law enforcement officers.
They also called in Nathan Lapham who worked at the Giddings Police Department with Jimmy Fennell but was not involved in the Stites investigation. He said he was not aware of any complaints against Fennell at Giddings PD. ....

On day 4 of Rodney Reed s appeal hearing, the state and defense both took time to question Stites fiancÃ©, Jimmy Fennell.
BASTROP, Texas - On day four of the Rodney Reed appeal, the defense brought in their final witnesses.
The first one was a former HEB employee who worked with Stacey Stites and helped solidify claims against Jimmy Fennell, Stites fiance, that she was afraid of him.
Soon after, Fennell himself waived his Fifth Amendment rights, and took the stand.
