Despite SDP funding, 96 taluks continue to remain backward in Karnataka

Despite ₹27,346.32 crore being spent on backward taluks under the Special Development Plan (SDP) over the Past 12 years, the socio-economic conditions and infrastructure development remain below par in 96 taluks of the State.
Budgetary and additional funding of ₹37,124.35 crore was given to 114 backward taluks under the SDP since 2007-08. Out of this, ₹27,346.32 crore has been spent, according to official sources. The backward taluks had been identified by the D.M. Nanjundappa committee on regional imbalance.
During a review meeting chaired by K.C. Narayana Gowda, Minister for Planning and Statistics, and Sports and Youth Empowerment, it was revealed that 29 taluks still remained “most backward” eight in Bengaluru division, three in Kalaburagi division, and 18 in Belagavi region. UK Government delivers more than one million devices to disadvantaged pupils
More than one million laptops and tablets have now been delivered to the most disadvantaged children across the country, as part of a £400 million government investment that will support schools and young people for years to come.
Official statistics published today show the government has delivered 1,055,745 laptops and tablets to the children who need them most to help make sure their education can continue during the pandemic.
Thousands of families have also received additional data from mobile operators, following the Department’s work to help children without internet access get online. This has supported access to educational resources to help children while most are being educated from home. ....

A warrior for the needy and disadvantaged and a relentless woman who fought for people who couldn t fight for themselves.
That s how Tauranga activist and community volunteer Colleen Spiro is being remembered after her death on Sunday, aged 67.
She had long-term health battles but her passing came as a shock to some who loved her.
Spiro was known for her many efforts to help Tauranga s homeless as well as for being outspoken on various council issues, speaking up for Māori and protesting against racism. ....
