Old-fashioned baked beans still savored
FRANKLIN A bag of beans is something of a marvel. What else costs so little but can raise so much money at community suppers?
That is, of course, if Franklin’s Dick Gardner, aka the Bean Man, has transformed the small legumes into his rich, slightly sweet, baked beans.
As his contribution to the local fire department and other groups, Dick Gardner (left) regularly cooks up great quantities of his delectable baked beans for fund-raisers. In his secret recipe, he uses both Marafax and Megquier’s yellow-eye beans. Dried not wet mustard is a must. ELLSWORTH AMERICAN PHOTO BY JENNIFER OSBORN

A Maine dog rescue recently received a big cash donation from Miranda Lambert s charity foundation.
Miranda Lambert s love of dogs stretches country-wide. Her MuttNation Foundation annually makes a donation to one animal shelter in all 50 states. The Settling Down singer s Mutts Across America grant totaled $250,000. Lambert told the Tennessean, While the pandemic really opened people s hearts and homes to adopting and fostering in record numbers, shelters were unable to hold their regular fundraising events, which left a big gap.
We know that these funds will help shelters continue to provide a great environment for their pets, employees, volunteers and the communities at-large that they serve.
Franklin couple partial to tailless felines
FRANKLIN For the pet lover, looking for a cat that acts like a dog, the Manx breed may be the perfect match.
“We’re just head over heels for these cats,” said Kim Walker, who with her husband, Michael, are “fur parents” to three Manx. “They act more like dogs.”
This is due to their personalities, Kim explained, noting Marley, Piper and Kyra are very social, love being around people and like to play games.
The Walkers divide their time between their house in Franklin and work-in-progress home and gardens in Lamoine.
“I swear they have a sense of humor,” Kim said. “They love to play games.”
