Henry Ford Cancer Institute launches new initiative to improve minority participation in clinical trials
Henry Ford Cancer Institute is launching the Participatory Action for Access to Clinical Trials (PAACT) project to dramatically improve the representation of the African American community and other minorities in cancer clinical trials.
Supported by a $750,000 grant from Genentech, PAACT is a community-based research initiative in collaboration with the Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center (Detroit URC) that will address various barriers to trust and participation in clinical trials. Researchers and community partners will focus on clinical trials involving breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancers, which are more likely to result in death for African Americans when compared to other racial and ethnic groups. The project is being implemented in partnership with community-based organizations and community leaders who are key stakeholders. ....

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) is the most prevalent form of lung cancer, accounting for more than 80 percent of all lung cancer cases. Despite the aggressive nature of NSCLC, circulating tumor cells that lead to metastases often go undetected in the blood compared to breast, prostate, colorectal, and other cancers.
Now, scientists have developed a novel method to better detect the circulating tumor cells (CTCs) that are a telltale sign of metastases. The research was published in the journal

New prostate cancer fitness class first in northern NZ
A new specialist fitness class for men living with prostate cancer has been started in Stanmore Bay on Whangaparāoa Peninsula.
The Prost-FIT exercise group is one of only seven such classes throughout New Zealand and is the only one being held anywhere north of Auckland’s North Shore.
Group trainer Lis MacLeod says research shows that exercise can increase cancer survival rates by as much as 60 percent and the classes will benefit men at any stage of diagnosis or treatment.
Sessions feature tailored activities including cardio, resistance and ball skills to help to improve men’s overall strength, balance and stamina. ....
