BROOKFIELD, WI The Brookfield East High School and Brookfield Central Black Student Union on Monday condemned the Common Council s action on February s Black History Month resolution.
While we re happy to see the city of Brookfield begin to discuss some issues Black Americans face in the area, we are disappointed that the specific issue of racism and inequality were overlooked in the proclamation, the union said in a statement Monday.
The Common Council voted 12-2 Feb. 16 to approve a Black History Month resolution that had been revised by Mayor Steve Ponto. The mayor said the original version was negative in tone. ....

BROOKFIELD, WI The School District of Elmbrook is mourning the loss of one of its students.
Mark Kassab, 14, of Brookfield died Wednesday in his sleep. He had undiagnosed congenital heart disease, according to a condolence announcement posted on ISM Brookfield.
Kassab was a freshman at Brookfield Central High School. He was an avid swimmer and a cross country runner, according to the post. The district confirmed that he attended Brookfield Central and was an athlete.

BROOKFIELD, WI Brookfield Central High School junior Carter VanHaren will showcase his sign business in front of a panel of celebrity judges to compete for a $10,000 scholarship.
It s part of a Shark Tank -style competition hosted by Junior Achievement of Wisconsin and sponsored by Ernst & Young at Majic Productions in Waukesha on January 28, according to a news release.
VanHaren has built a sign-making business called American Maker. He identified an opportunity for professional signs when he noticed other secondhand shoe sellers using crumpled up pieces of paper with drawn-on logos next to shoe merchandise, the release said. ....
