Samoa s prime minister-elect was locked out of the Pacific nation s parliament in extraordinary scenes on Monday, as her political rival refused to accept electoral defeat prompting claims of a coup.
Fiame Naomi Mata afa arrived at parliament ready to be appointed Samoa s first female prime minister, accompanied by judges in formal robes and horsehair wigs whose job was to witness her swearing-in.
Instead, they were barred from entering the parliamentary chamber as police looked on while her supporters sang hymns and called for the results of the 9 April general election to be honoured.

Pacific island swears in its first female PM in a tent after she is locked out of Parliament
Samoa swore in its first female Prime Minister in a makeshift ceremony in a tent Monday after she was locked out of Parliament amid a power struggle with the country’s longstanding leader.
Fiame Naomi Mata’afa’s Faith in the One True God (FAST) Party said the dramatic turn of events amounted to a “bloodless coup” following weeks of uncertainty after the country’s deadlocked April 9 election.
Her narrow election victory was set to end almost 40 years of rule by the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP), which has governed almost uninterrupted since 1982, and more than two decades with Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi as Prime Minister. ....

Samoa has been in constitutional crisis and mired in controversy since its April 9 election.
Samoa s caretaker Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi is refusing to back down and has accused the incoming Government of “treason” in a blistering speech.
Fiame Naomi Mata’afa was sworn in as Samoa’s first female prime minister on Monday evening and her Faatuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) party as the new government, in a ceremony held in a makeshift parliament convened in a tent after the defeated government refused to cede power.
With the doors to the actual parliament locked to try to stop the transition of power and the ousted prime minister refusing to obey Supreme Court orders, analysts warned that the island nation was experiencing a bloodless coup. ....
