Traditional hay meadows should now be closed

SHARING OPTIONS:
Traditional hay meadows cannot be grazed from 15 April until after they are mown annually, which must be after 1 July.
The prohibited period for grazing traditional hay meadows under the Green Low Carbon Agri-Environmental Scheme (GLAS) came into effect this week.
Grazing is not permitted from Thursday 15 April until after the meadow is mown annually, which must be after 1 July.
The maximum application of chemical nitrogen over the year is 40kg per annum or 32 units per acre.
The maximum level of chemical phosphorus allowable is determined by soil samples governing the nutrient management plan.
Weed wiping and/or spot spraying can take place between 15 March and when the meadow is mown annually to control rushes. However, topping cannot take place between these dates. ....

Top tips for a successful breeding season on dairy farms

Maximise submission rate
If you don’t serve the cow, you won’t get her in calf. The target six-week in-calf rate is 75%. This means that 75% of milking cows in the herd should be in-calf after six weeks of breeding.
When heifers are introduced at calving time, there should be 90% of the herd calved in six weeks.
To maximise submission rate, missed heats, silent heats and problem cows should be checked out early.
The best way to achieve this is to carry out pre-breeding heat detection or a pre-breeding scan. If doing heat detection, the easiest thing to do is to tail-paint all cows three weeks out from breeding and top up the paint once weekly. At mating start date, those still with paint on should be drafted out and seen by a vet. ....

Watch: grazing update from Thrive demo farm

Yearling cattle at pasture on the demo farm. \ Philip Doyle
The yearling cattle are at grass with almost a month at this stage on the Thrive demonstration farm. As they come to graze the last couple of paddocks in the first rotation, they are entering higher grass covers than we would have liked.
This is not too much of an issue at this stage of the year as there is no stem appearing in the base of the sward just yet.
The focus needs to be on achieving a good graze-out of these swards in order to reset the paddock for the next grazing rotation. ....

Moisture a welcome relief in tinder-dry North Dakota; Horse Pasture Fire 95% contained

A system sweeping in from the north is bringing cooler weather and also moisture to the parched Northern Plains, aiding crews that have been battling wildfires in western North Dakota including a large one in Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
The 8-square-mile Horse Pasture Fire in the park s North Unit was 95% contained Monday, with the other 5% encompassing rugged Badlands terrain, according to National Park Service Fire Information Officer Mike Johnson. Officials have lifted numerous restrictions and planned to reopen the park s scenic drive Tuesday.
But the precipitation isn t likely to have a dramatic impact on extreme drought blanketing much of the state, even with some northern areas expected to get several inches of snow by midweek. ....
