Cattle grazing at Pismo Preserve help with fire prevention, native plant restoration

1:50
If you go for a hike at the Pismo Preserve over the next few months, you may come across a herd of cattle grazing the rangeland area of the preserve to eat invasive weeds such as black mustard, help restore the diversity of native plant life and reduce the risk of wildfire.
The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County helps manage the Pismo Preserve and is partnering with Cal Poly’s range manager to use more than 50 of his personal cattle to graze the land.
Cal Poly Range Manager Aaron Lazanoff said recent wildfires have increased awareness of the need for mitigation and introducing the cows is a good fire prevention strategy. ....

Watch: Thrive dairy calf to beef special

This week’s 20-page special dairy calf to beef supplement in the
Irish Farmers Journal focuses on all things dairy calf to beef from purchasing calves, health management, grazing advice, completing budgets and taking a look at the markets for dairy beef.
With dairy cow numbers increasing, more and more beef in the future will come from the dairy herd.
It’s important that our readers are fully briefed on the positives and negatives of any farm system.
This is why we set up the Thrive programme three years ago, with our stand-alone dairy calf to beef demonstration farm in Cashel, Co Tipperary. ....

Five tips for reducing the risk of tetany in suckler cows

SHARING OPTIONS:
Spring is a period when weather can be extremely variable, putting suckler cows sucking a calf at a higher risk of grass tetany.
Changeable weather is forecast for the week ahead and this will increase the risk of grass tetany in spring-calving cows that are suckling calves at grass.
Herd owners should be keeping a close eye on lactating cows for early signs of tetany. But by following these five steps, the risk posed to cows is greatly reduced.
Magnesium supplementation
Providing cows with supplementary magnesium is the most common method of preventing tetany on suckler farms.
There are various forms of magnesium supplementation on the market and there are pros and cons to them all, depending on cost, practicality of using them and how long they provide cover for. ....

Dairy Management: breeding, fertiliser for silage ground and lime

Fertiliser: With the fine weather, many farmers are thinking of fertilising silage ground.
In terms of nitrogen (N), the Teagasc advice is that a good crop of first-cut silage will require 100 units per acre and this should be spread at least 50 days before cutting.
Therefore, ground destined to be cut in late May will need N now. About 25% of the N applied to date will still be available. So if 30 units/acre has been spread for grazing, around eight units/acre should still be available.
Equally, if slurry was spread before now at a rate of say 2,500gallons/acre, then around five units/acre should still be available. I think there is scope to reduce N on silage ground. Spreading 80 units/acre is a 20% saving on N and should not impact much on yield. ....

Tetany issues on beef farms as weather takes a turn

SHARING OPTIONS:
The recent wet and cold weather over the last few days seems to have brought a spike in tetany and pneumonia cases.
Speaking to a few farmers and vets this week, the recent wet and cold weather over the last few days seems to have brought a spike in tetany and pneumonia cases.
Suckler cows have a poor capability of storing magnesium (Mg) in their body and need a daily supply to prevent deficiency.
It is common with suckler cows when they are grazing very bare, as well as lush, pastures.
This grass is frequently low in Mg due to quick growth and heavy slurry spreading, which is high in potassium and can have a negative effect on Mg uptake. ....
