This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. It’s a week to honor public safety communications officers in E-911 centers. The City of Roanoke will recognize dispatchers throughout the week. Roanoke’s dispatchers handle more than 275,000 calls a year. In Montgomery County, the Board of Supervisors is expected to pass a resolution tonight, honoring the work of dispatchers.
Virginia’s Redistricting Commission will meet today. It will discuss the budget, redistricting website and take public comments. The group was formed to limit political influence in the redistricting process and is made up of lawmakers and citizens. ....

Angels of Assisi receives $500,000 grant to continue its work helping animals

Angels of Assisi announced Monday that it received a $500,000 grant from Petco Love.
The money will help fund Angels’ new facility that’s under construction, which will cost roughly $3 million. This sizable investment could get them there even sooner.
“It helps us keep more people with their pets and help more pets in this community. The new facility is going to be even larger. We’re going to go from two exam rooms to six our surgical suite’s going to be even bigger, so it’s going to enable us to help even more pets in the community,” said Dayna Reynolds, director of communications for Angels of Assisi. ....

ROANOKE, Va. – Runners rejoice!
Saturday will mark the return of the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon. This year, it’s bringing more than just a healthy challenge to downtown Roanoke, it’s also bringing a sense of normalcy.
The marathon has more than 2,700 runners already registered and while some are planning to take the virtual option, the majority of those registered are competing on the downtown course.
To make sure everyone is safe, there are changes and guidelines people have to follow. Below are just a few new safety measures for 2021. ....

American Idol contestant Casey Bishop has shown her love for rock since her first audition, an acapella version of Motley Crue s Live Wire. Last week, she performed Wish You Were Here with Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd. Casey was at it again last night performing Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden. CLOVERDALE â The letter-shaped balloons floated skyward in an alphabet of grief Saturday as a family mourned the still-unsolved shooting death of Roanoke toddler Nazim Shimin Claytor.
Mixed among balloons spelling out the boyâs first name were more shaped like the numeral 3 â Nazimâs age when the vehicle he was in was sprayed with bullets one year ago, killing him in his car seat.
And the rainy skies above Old Dominion Memorial Gardens were briefly decorated with more balloons shaped like hearts and others bearing pictures of Spiderman, a nod to the webslinger fandom that had briefly gripped Nazimâs young life. ....
