TX Democrats Sing We Shall Overcome (Twice) in D C

By Caleb HoweJul 13th, 2021, 5:00 pm   Texas Democrats split the state this week to prevent a quorum from being reached and thus block (or “filibuster” if you will) passage of a bill by the duly elected majority in the Texas legislature. Upon arriving in D.C., the vacationers broke out in a spontaneous performance of “We Shall Overcome.” Then they spontaneously did it again the next day, coincidentally following little media coverage of the first show. Performance one began during an on-the-tarmac presser late Monday night. The Democrats, arriving as they were from many hours on the beer bus and the maskless private and/or chartered flight (in violation of FAA rules and CDC guidelines), held their first presser quite late, on the tarmac of the airport, before departing to their temporary quarters in D.C. to weather the sacrifice and hardship of the trip.

Pelosi s optimism has not been shared by several of her colleagues who have blasted Manchin as a do-nothing lawmaker who opposes the rights of minority voters. Manchin penned an op-ed in the Charleston Gazette-Mail last week, which explained bluntly why I m voting against the For the People Act. Democrats Are Forgetting What s Popular About Their Big Democracy Bill

Democrats Are Forgetting What’s Popular About Their Big Democracy Bill Ditching the anti-corruption provisions of the For the People Act could turn a political winner into a partisan food fight. Democrats’ chances to pass the For The People Act, their sweeping plan to reform the nation’s democracy, are already slipping away. Their ultra-thin majority in the Senate means they lack the votes to eliminate the filibuster Republicans will rely on to block the legislation. And even if the party had the will to overcome the 60-vote requirement, pivotal Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia has said he prefers narrower legislation.
