Support duck leads Virginia woman to peace of mind

RADFORD — Kat Owens laughed last week as she said that her best friend is a duck named Jellybean.
“I’m the ‘Duck Lady.’ It’s stuck and I’ve embraced it,” the 23-year-old said.
Jellybean turns 4 in June.

The nickname began around her Fairlawn home, Owens said, but has extended to other parts of the New River Valley, thanks to Jellybean accompanying her to all manner of community events in the past few years.
“I very rarely leave him at home,” Owens said.
You may have seen them together — Jellybean on a leash and wearing a discreet diaper that blends with his dark feathers, sometimes snuggling in Owens’ arms, sometimes pacing around her, head darting toward whatever interests him, muttering a constant, soft, quacking cluck. ....

Academics from PLoS Genetics a peer-reviewed scientific journal now have an explanation, Gizmodo reported.
The unusual gait can be explained by a genetic mutation, the study found.
This species has a warped RORB gene, BBC Newsround said. This was the only mutation that stood out as really striking, Miguel Carneiro, an academic at the University of Porto, told the media outlet.
A mutation in the RORB gene can result in the loss of spinal cord interneurons.

Norman police respond to shooting incident at Norman Community Dog Park

The Norman Police Department responded to a Norman dog park after a report of a shot German Shepherd Saturday afternoon.
When police arrived at the Norman Community Dog Park, located at 1001 E. Robinson St., the suspect on the scene claimed his dog was interacting with the victim’s dog, which became aggressive, according to a police report. That s when the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun, firing one shot and hitting the victim’s dog, a German Shepherd.
Witnesses at the scene told NPD the two animals appeared to be playing, according to the report. The victim took his dog to a veterinarian, and its condition is unknown. ....
